Filtering out background noise in FCP

Hi - I recorded sound and video using my HVX200, a Sennheiser shotgun mic with Rycote softie, on the end of a metal fish pole and held with a pole holder and C stand.

The actors were about 2 ft away from the mic.
It was a windy day. Their dialogue is fine BUT the background sound is a bit "boomy" as the wind wreaked havoc that day - sound of wind in the trees, against the softie, etc.

How can I get rid of some of the undesirable sound using the audio filters in FCP (mac) if at all?

Thanks...

You can probably roll off the low end a bunch with out effecting the dialog much, also the high. You have to be careful not to get it sounding hollow but rolling off the bottom should get rid of a lot of the buffeting and the highs will help if you have "wind in the trees" getting in the way.

Yes exactly. THe biggest tools in cleaning dialog are cutting, Really one of the most powerful tools at your disposal. EQ, especially a very flexible one. I used to recommend Elemental Audio systems EQ plugins, they are very flexible but Roger Nichols has acquired them and while I still highly recommend them they aren't the bargain they used to be. They are still attractively priced ($250 each) as far as pro plugs go but they may well be above your pain threshold. The third is dynamics. A good multi zone compressor/ expander is a very powerful tool. They come in two varieties. The most common has the zones by frequency, very useful, the other style is what Elemental (now Roger nicholes) sells and that has the zones by volume level. For your purposes the first kind would probably be best. The second kind works really well where your trying to get rid of low level signals or tame Loud ones.
