ISO question

I am new to the DSLR game, and I recently purchased the 7D.

I had been following the camera a few months before its release, and had been watching all the tests and such.

One thing I noticed is that other people ran a bunch of ISO tests and shot at 1600 and higher in low light conditions and it looked really well, however when I have tried to do it myself, it is completely grainy even at 1600.

Am I missing something?

Do the icons on the left side of the screen in video mode have anything to do with it? (ie standard, strong, low?)

Does Raw refer solely to still photos?

can anyone help?

Raw refers just to stills.

ISO noise is much more noticeable at F5.6 and above, in low light, in the shadows and over dim plain areas with little detail to distract from the noise.

I can get silky smooth ISO 1600 videos with the 5D, which is similar to the 7D for low light performance, but only when there is enough light feeding the sensor. High ISO is no substitute to a nice fast lens, F1.8 or under. When the light drops, you see banding and noise even at ISO 400 in certain areas of the image.

Make sure noise reduction is turned on, and set to strong - then see if you prefer the image.
