GH4 ISO Lens Cap Test

I will RARELY touch 1600. Actually haven't yet - even shooting scenes at night (with lighting), To me, it's too messy to be useful. But, I don't have NEAT VIDEO to clean things up either.

I've a question: how are you filming ISO in between 200 and 400? I can't find a switch that allows more than 200/400/800/1600 etc?? How is that done? I'm on FW 2.0 and dug through menus... what did I miss?

I shoot in a gym that in some areas wasn't very bright and had to kick it up to 1600 and it was fine. If the scene isn't really dark but you need an extra stop you can get away with it. Shooting at night with no lights at 1600 you will see lots of noise. I have Denoiser and it works very well. It does soften the image a little so it's a trade off. If the GH4 had 100% usable 1600 ISO I would be thrilled. That really seems to be the cap for my shooting needs. I tend to be around 600 ISO max most of the time.

You can change that in the menu when you are in manual (photo) mode.

I think you have to go into photo mode and change your ISO increments. At least that's how I did it.

so, change it in PHOTO MODE, then switch back to VIDEO MODE to film 4K?

Once you make the change in PHOTO MODE it stays in effect for all camera modes until you go back and change it. ( i.e. change it once, and you never have to change it again )

Wow, guys! Erik just told you how to set ISO in 1/3 increments. I'll copy paste it again.

Don't you guys go through the entire menu and play with the functions when you get a new camera and see what each option does?

I think this test will only prove what the gh4 will look like if you make a movie about shooting the back of lens caps. Get out and shoot.

why mess with PHOTO modes for a video camera? :D Now, I can't wait to activate that

my second reply was to confirm people were not STAYING in photo mode and shooting HD to get extra ISOs, but no one could read my mind over the net. yet.

unexpected results...

unexpected results...

Strange. The lower ISO clips are noisy with lots of vertical, rain-like motion. The smoothest, most noise-free clips were 1,000 and 1,250 ISO. I'm wondering if vimeo's compression completely wiped out the noise of the higher ISO clips. Very strange.

Umm it's not a video camera... It's a true hybrid, I really appreciate that it is quite a monster stills shooter with its feature set and high performance while still being able to do great 4K video at this price point.

I know, but I bought it exclusively for video and never do anything will stills. Thus, I never bothered with the STILLS menus in the camera, never found the ISO setting. Why I was scratching my head! Any other video nuggets hidden in the PHOTO menus?

I do have a minor nit with the use of the term 'video'... I didn't buy any of my 'moving picture' capable cameras to shoot 'video'... I bought them to make digital Film movies...

As such, as many Film film or Digital Film concepts can be used to describe and set parameters...

If someone wants to shoot 'video'... then get a camera that has Gain in dB units... and while they're at it... XLR inputs for audio... and how about a fixed lens, albeit having smoother zoom motor...

While I fully agree with you in heart, it's just video. There is no plastic FILM or chemicals invlved. Kinda like some of us still call collections of MP3s and "Album" but it really isn't. I make a "film" in the "watchable story" sense, but not ON "Film" the celluloid chem sense. On my computer, I edit "video" for my "Film". Ok, now *I* am confused!! hahahahaha
