Martial Artsy - action comedy shot on HVX200

Nicely done Kiyong, I don't know where that kid got his martial arts skills from - but I guess all of us artists kick arse when it comes down to it!

Brilliantly highlarious. Loved the fight scene. Would have liked a little tighter camera work on some of it, but rockin movie my friend!

thanks guys. i agree, i wish a had more coverage. especially tighter shots as was mentioned, but i ran out of time. darn! i might try to expand the story a bit as a web miniseries at some point, with more opponents and crazy art school training scenes.

festival screening plus live reading of new script

hey guys,
my short got into the dc shorts film festival in september, where it will be projected in HD.

also, my short horror script is one of the finalists in the screenwriting competition, and will be performed live. if anyone is in DC, check it out!

Hey I thought that was really good. Congrats on getting into DC shorts, its a touch festival to get into. What camera did you use and how did you get Atom films to fund it?

thanks! i shot on the panasonic hvx200 with the stock lens, no 35 adapter. atomfilms opened up their studio dept about a year ago. you pitch them an idea and if they like it, they want to see a script, then hopefully you get a greenlight and they give you some money. at the time, they wanted shorts under 5 minutes. check out their website. good luck!

That was awesome! Yeah, you needed some more coverage for the fight. A medium or close up when the girl was talking to the dude, telling him it was martial arts.

I loved it though.

What MA style was that? or was it just a mix of styles? I'd love to hear a bit about the choreography and how it came about.

hey thanks! the actor who played the art student studies wushu in real life, and the actor who played the opponent is a professional stuntman and has studied multiple styles including shotokan karate. i was lucky to find actors who were skilled martial artists.

for the choreography, i showed the fight choreographer a couple specific moves i wanted, and also general things like, he has to kick him away at this point, or, i want some kind of throw, etc. then he came up with the specific moves and linked them all together. i taped the rehearsals to check the timing of the whole fight and we made some adjustments to make things move a bit faster.

i definitely want to try shooting action again. it was hard but it was fun.

I would love to shoot action as well. I study Kyokushin Karate. Haven't been doing it for long, but I also studied it when I was younger, and tried Judo a bit. I would love to do some martial arts in my movies. Got any other advice?

this is a great book on shooting low budget action movies, dv rebel's guide, but it doesn't really cover fight choreography, more gun stuff and visual fx using computers. for fight choreography, i couldn't find much information out there in books or even online. i would just say rehearse a lot and make safety a top priority. good luck.
