Is Vimeo the Way?

I'm trying to determine the best place to post videos.

Vimeo seems to be the choice for many. Is there a reason for this? Is Vimeo Plus ($59.95/yr) sufficient and a good deal? What alternatives are worth considering?

Thanks!

Vimeo and Exposure Room are preferred because people have the option to download the original files.

Exposureroom plays well even on my slower computers. (after buffering of course)

I also use vimeo for more personal stuff.

Pro work I place in XR.

Vimeo Plus is sufficient and a good deal if you need what it offers and have $60 a year to spend on the benefits. Seriously, that's a question none of us can answer for you.

Do you have to pick just one site?

I'm not quite familiar with exposureroom, but if vimeo as a free subscription, why don't try both. I personally like vimeo for it's community, sharing options and design.

Too bad every time a new camera gets out it's filled with tests but... what are you going to do...

vimeo rules and the free option is not bad. the draw backs are only 500MB of uploading a week and only one HD video a week (someone correct me if i am wrong on that)

Well its not free...its not even cheap...in fact its actually expensive in comparison, but...

I use a pro account on SmugMug. Yea its high in price, but those people are fast at solving any questions or issues. From what I understand its a family owned/run operation and they do act as such. Sure I pay, but they have always treated me like I was the only person who ever needed help.

Also, I am not sure Vimeo matches the size and quality of what you are allowed on SmugMug...but don't quote me on that one because I am not "that" familiar with Vimeo and all they offer...I just have never used Vimeo so others who have would certainly be more help.

Regards,

G.

I've used XR and Vimeo and have had issues and needed to email them. Both sets of staff have been helpful and friendly and stuff!

Youtube.

I'm biased because I am a partner, and if you are going to put up content online, you might as well be making money off that content. I'm also one of the partners testing the download option for selling downloadable content.

Youtube has excellent 720p video quality and extremely good audio quality. If you are a partner, you get your content transcoded into HD within minutes of uploading, at a higher bit rate than other youtube videos. Besides the benefit of generating income, Youtube is seeded into google searches much more than any other content website.

Vimeo has a great layout, and great streaming, but they are making money off of placing ads next to your content! The pro service should allow you to place ads near or around your content for generating revenue.

YouTube HD has always been slow on my computer. Vimeo HD is slow on my computer. (choppy hd video).

If you know a little about website design (just ftp stuff) you should use SimpleCDN. It only costs 3¢ a gig transfer with NO minimums or contracts. They even give you $15 worth of free credit when you sign up.

Advantages- you can upload a nice quicktime version (or any format you want) of your video at any compression, size, or quality. It would just cost you 3¢ a gig transfer which ends up being cheaper than Vimeo's pro account. You can also use Flash Streaming Server at no extra charge.

Disadvantages: No community or feedback features - its just your video file being hosted by a super-fast cdn site. But you can just email or post links to your video. Need to know a little about ftp uploading - not that hard.

Good luck!

If you understnand hosting you can also look at amazon's aws its also a pay as you go CDN, the pricing is (I think) a bit cheaper.

Vimeo - HD runs awfully choppy on my computer. The vid management system is nice and easy to use though.
YouTube - has good HD fucntionality now, it's worth checking out.
Blip.tv - may not be exactly what you're looking for, but probably has all or most of the functionality you need. The interface is a little messy, but it is also free and allows you to push your videos out to YouTube (not HD though), iTunes and more.

If this is for your own personal use to test vids out, go with Vimeo, the privacy settings are nice and free.

If you're going for quality and smooth playback, do the pay-as-you-go CDN (my preference) or pay for a host like exposure room, smugmug, or vimeo.

If you want quality distribution and a good understanding of stats behind your video go for Blip.tv's pro account ($8 a month)

There are tons of options, it's all about knowing what you want out of your video being online and matching those needs most appropriately to the myriad services out there.

This is all great advice... Thanks everyone.

I'm leaning towards Vimeo, but won't make a decision until later in the week.

As my skills evolve, it appears that I may need more than one service provider. No one size appears to fit all, and more recommendations are welcomed!

I use Hostmonster.com for both video and my html pages. I get unlimited space, which I definitely need. It would be nice to not have to convert everything to flv after rendering the Quicktime, and I would love to have an HD option, but I want people going to my web site.

for me, I use the services that maximize exposure.. image quality, although it pains me, is a secondary concern to connecting with audience. and there are a heck of a lot more people on YouTube than anywhere else. the short I did recently just surpassed 10,000 views and the comments have been overwhelmingly positive. on vimeo, that same short has less than 1,000 views.

Post your stuff everywhere if for free, then you will get most exposure and more people will see it,dont choose only one website for this.

Agreeing with the "don't put your eggs in one basket" people. If I up a vid, it's going to hit Youtube, Vimeo, and ExposureRoom.

I post on a few websites, but I usually just push one, depending on what I'm going for. My last video was on Youtube and Vimeo, but I was only linking the Vimeo version.
