Is this the dreaded Mac OS/ P2 hiccup? Or...

is it something else ?

G5 Quad/ OS 10.4.8/ FCP 5.1.2

The clip is not corrupt ( or is it?) , as it plays on the timeline and the audio is fine. it's just the video that takes this momentary hit twice in the clip. Once right after rolling camera and then another twenty seconds in.

The camera was running off of the power supply rather than batteries, could it be a power spike?

The cards were off loaded from the camera via FW 400, and this showed up in the P2 import window.

Is there any way to fix it?

I'm all ears- I'd really like to hear from those in the know.

Thanks a bunch

Do you still have an image of the P2 cards that you could try to dump back onto the cards and view in the camera, or try to open using FCP 5.1.1?

Is this just one frame each at the beginning and twenty seconds in, or more than that?

That is the classic Mac "glitch" that happens, yes. The OSX bug is a "failure to import" issue, but this here is what I call the "glitch." And yes it happens when transferring files from the card to the Mac. Once you have the files on your hard disk, if they glitched during transfer they're glitched for good.

The only way to fix it is to re-import from the card. And if you don't have the footage on the card anymore, now you understand why I say that this bug is absolutely unacceptable and Apple MUST fix it.

Yes, I have seen a MACPro tower do this to footage.

Ok, I understand that this is probably a mac issue but are we sure because I use a intel based mac pro, p2 and firestore, and have never experienced this. Could it be a certain video card issue? or firewire card issue? I've offloaded a lot of footage and never seen this before. Shouldn't this be happening to all mac users?

When it comes to computers it could be any number of things and that is why it's so difficult to track down. I use a G4 PB and I have never had a problem either, but the fact is a problem does exist and it seems to be predominantly mac based. One of the reasons Barry started a thread on this months ago was to try and find some constant factor between all the people that have had a problem but so far that has proved elusive.

That's what we all want to find out. It doesn't happen to many Mac users.

So when does it happen? Why does it happen to some and not others? Is it some piece of software you're using (like Norton)?

We can rule out the processor, because we've got reports of it happening on G4s, G5s, and Intels. It happens from the card slot but it also happens from firewire ingesting.

Any light anyone can share on when it happens to them, and what hardware/software combination they're running (especially any terminate & stay resident type programs) would be most appreciated. Sooner or later we're going to narrow it down to some particular combination, and that info will give us a) a recommendation for our members to avoid that combination, and b) more definitive info to give to Apple to get it fixed.

No, I didn't do the disk image thing- unfortunately :-( . In fact I need to learn how to do that operation- uhh, em especially now. So... creating a disk image would allow me to go back, dump the clip to a card and repair the glitch??? The fortunate part is that out of nine reels on the project, this is the only incident I've seen. Key words being "I've seen". We should be able to cover the glitch with b-roll, although it wouldn't otherwise be desirable at that point in the interview.

When I get a chance I'll pour over the clip and time the glitches on the time code. As reccollect thew first one was within 5 seconds of the shots beginning, and then this one 20 or so seconds in.

FWIW- I was shooting DVCPRO 50 60i on a 8gb card.

Workflow on this project:
1. close the write protect tab
2. drag card to G5 Quad from FW connected camera.
3. change name from "no name" to " project name reel 2"
4. I had to convert to QT's for my editor, so I did so through P2 import in FCP 5.1.2.
That's when I noticed the glitch.

Ironically, just yesterday I did what Barry and others had suggested doing and filed a bug rreport/ complaint with Apple, even though I had not personally had the problem yet. What are the odds? Actually, I would really like to know what the odds are. Apple ?

### UPDATE: the glitches happened 5 and 19 seconds into the clip FWIW.

How about we start a database of application combos that people are running who have had the problem? I'm more than happy to post a screen grab of my apps. folder.
