GH3 Is this SD card fast enough for the GH3?

I wouldn't use it at only 30mb/s. Get the 95mb/s 64gb Sandisk extreme and that will last you a while and handle the higher bitrates in .mov mode. Or the 128gb if you want to splash out.

I have this SD card, in both 16GB and 32GB, left over from my Canon SLR days, is it enough for the GH3?

I have a couple of those in 16GB left over from Canon T3i and 60D (both cameras sold to finance some GH2's) and they seem to work fine in my GH3's at the 50mbps MOV settings so they should work OK until you can get the faster ones. I've relegated my two 30MB/s cards to the Lumix GX1 I use as my "carry around" still camera, and use the Extreme Pro 45MB/s and 90MB/s media in my GH3's now.

According to the GH3 specs page, it says anything that is "Class 10" (like the SD card I linked above) should be fine: http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh3/specifications.html

"Use a card with SD Speed Class with "Class10""

Class 10 meaning that the SD is capable of writing at 10MBps (megabytes per second); 10MBps (megabytes per second) is equivalent to 80Mbps (megabits per second) - the GH3 has two high-quality recording modes; 72Mbps (ALL-Intra) or 50Mbps (IPB); so shouldn't a SD card that is "Class 10" (capable of writing 10MBps, which is 80mbps) be enough?

Oh please. I have a bunch of these cards for my GH3 and I always used them on my hacked GH2 with 176mbps driftwood hack.

Class 10 is all you need for video on a GH3. Anything more than class 10 won't help you one bit for video with unhacked Panasonic cameras.

Any clue what the longest 'take' you can make on the largest card in a GH3 might be?

Your battery is going to give out before a large card will, so without using the GH3 battery grip you should get 3-4 hours with the North American version of the GH3. Add on the battery grip and your are up to 6-8 hours of footage. ( the battery lasts longer with non-electronic lenses )

Add an external battery supply and theoretically you should be able to get 10-11 hours shooting 24 Mbps AVCHD with a 128 GB SDXC card. ( longest single take I've shot to date was 80 minutes with my GH2, and I could have gone another 10-15 minutes more before the battery would die )

Some class 10 cards can't maintain a minimum write speed of 10 MB/sec for extended periods, so class 10 performance will vary depending on the brand of card you are using. ( no problem with all of the premium brand cards )

You do NOT need a 95MB/s card. Waste of money unless you want to future proof yourself in the event of some super duper mega high bit rate hack being released. I'm using Sandisk 45MB/s and they are performing perfectly in my GH3 at 1080p50 MOV.

I also use the Sandisk Pro 45MB/s memory cards on my GH3 and haven't encountered a problem yet.

Remember that 24 megabits/s is 3 megabytes per second, or only 30% of the data rate that class 10 cards are supposed to meet. That said, trust a name brand. Even Transcends on the lower end have been reliable for me. Some of the real cheap brands have varying and limited quality assurance testing and might not actually meet the class 10 spec that they print on their cards.

The 30 is just fine... There is a huge difference between a Mb and a MB. 72mb = 9 MB 200Mb= 25MB so you can run an extreme hack and still have a card fast enough. An the Sandisk stuff is not crap, they are the best cards!

We have 5 or 6 Sandisk Extreme 45MBs that we film 24p and 60p with regularly and they've never had a hiccup.

The day the GH3 was released in the USA a couple of Panasonic's Reps told me the cards needed to be not only Class 10, but also UHS-1.

They also recommended recording ALL-I.

Like most users I avoid ALL-I, but wonder if the card recommendation is based on it's use.

Also remember that the speed rating of a card (45MBs, 30MBs etc) is the read speed. The write speed is a fair bit lower. Either way, as already mentioned, the difference between 45MB/s and the GH3's 50Mbps is huge so still plenty of head room.

i tried few times recording ALL I on my GH3 with my card Sandisk Ultra 64 Gb class 10 , 30mb speed. And i had problem, error saying something about the card. So i was considering to buy another one. I read people avoid using ALL-I. Why?

The question is for a GH3, but with either you'll find that complex scenes will stop the recording on some cameras (like mine.) Spend the extra $50 if you have it for a faster card.
