is this lens a good deal?

I know nothing about lenses but I am disappointed my GH2 doesnt come close to the shallow depth of field as my friends cheaper d3100 and t2i's. I am looking for a lens and adapter to give my GH2 a super shallow depth of field, mainly for talking heads. I hear 50mm lenses would be good? is this a good deal off of craigslist? Nikon 50mm F1.4D for $220? http://raleigh.craigslist.org/pho/3038382168.html

Would this work with my gh2 and does anyone have a link to an adapter to go with it?
Any better suggestions?

Yes, it's a good lens, and will work fine for what you want to do. With m43 and fast 50's in interviews, I prefer to stop down a little (~f2-2.8) to keep the subject in focus if they lean back or forward a little in the course of normal conversation.

Don't be disheartened by your deeper focus: it just means you can get exposure and still have a useable focus depth vs. APS-C or full-frame counterparts.

AI lenses like that work great with a simple adapter from someplace like Fotodiox .

yes FDs are VERY good (very filmic) for the money. You should get the FD and that Vivitar, I'm not sure about the 3rd one. I do know the Vivitar kicks ass too if it's a series 1.

EDIT: Come to think of it, $100 for all 3, why not?? :)

I recently picked up 3 Konica Hexanons lenses. Check out the 40mm 1.8 in this video (not my video) below. I got that lens for $49 on Ebay.

Only 2 things matter (more or less) for shallow depth of field.

1. Sensor size, and
2. Aperture of the lens.

Sensor size should be as big as your friends cheaper cameras (without me going to look). GH2 is only slightly smaller than the 7D, T2/3i and most cameras that are not full frame. So for shallow depth of field, you want to focus on the lens. You want a lens that opens up to F2.0 or better.

F1.4 I often find is too wide open and makes the DOF too shallow, except for very specific shots or dark shots where you need every last particle of light. I like F2.8 as a happy medium for relatively shallow DOF shots. I really like my 28mm F2.8 Minolta Rokkor lens.

Had the 40mm 1.8, not a fan, too soft wide open. I know every lens is soft wide open but 1.8 isn't that wide and it was not acceptable to me vs. other lenses. 57mm 1.4 Hexanon is a good budget lens with a close focusing distance.
