Is this even possible?

To get to a Super 35mm size chip they would have to add 2mm top & bottom and 3mm each side to th4/3 chip.
Having a quick look at the mount/chip of my 102, you could do the 3mm to the side without too many issues but 2mm to the bottom would come very close to the electrical lens contacts, may even overlap.

Whether native 4/3 lenses would cover the increased chip size would depend on each lens - longer ones shouldn't be a problem (I've got a 50mm designed for Super 16 that covers 4/3) but wider ones would probably vignette.

It would be possible if the camera's functions also included a crop mode that shoots out a 4/3 sized area of the sensor.

That way you'd have the option to shoot whatever you wanted, with a primary focus on M4/3 glass for automated functions. Best of all worlds.
I like that. S35 seems to be the standard now and Panasonic should make a version. They could keep the AF-### as a MFT line coming in at pretty much the same point and add a new S35 camera to compete with Sony and Canon. Competition could lower the price and give us an awesome camera.

if gh2 is 1.86 maybe they culd go slightly larger than that then itll atleast be closer to apsc which is 1.6

If this happened maybe we would see some attempts to put out adapters for 4/3 lenses for other mounts. I really just want a stupid dumb mount for the scarlet so I can swap voightlander 17.5, 25, and other native 4/3 lenses from the ghx, afx and red cameras

This seems to me to be the most obvious direction, but I wonder if Panasonic were to do this, then maybe they would introduce an overhaul of the Varicam range, with switchable S35 & M43. Reserve m43 for the AF range, which could then grow in either direction, maybe a 10 bit 422 version and on the lower end a more compact AVCHD version.

As posted earlier, some of the longer 4/3 glass might cover S35, but I would imagine the wider lenses would vignette.

This is exactly the way I would design my company's large sensor camera...
- m43 mount for the widest choice of glassless mount adapters
- s35 sized sensor for the right balance between aesthetics and economy (maybe make a FF-sensor-sized brother)
- selectable crop modes to accommodate almost any lens... 1.6, 2, 3, 4, and 5.4 to correspond to APS-C/S35, 4/3, Super-16, 2/3", and 1/2".

Now all I have to do is learn something about electronics (or at least how to get enough money to hire people who know something about electronics)

Panisonic has made some big mistakes in the last couple years and would need to do something big to get back a lot of customers they've lost. A super 35 sensor that crops th M4/3 might not be enough. They would officially be the last to implement Super 35. FF 35 that crops to Super 35 and M4/3 while recording AVCIntra or better would do it, but I doubt that will happen. Probably buying Sony or Nikon next.

Agree - AVC Intra, better resolution and increased DR are the keys for me, I think m43 sensor isn't perfect but good enough for 90% of my work.

Panasonic could trounce the competition by introducing a system that could switch between QuadHD and HD and would operate at 10 and 12 bits, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4, and speeds up to 60P. At $6K.

That's what I thought - but does anyone know if the M43 lens technically can cover s35? Quite agree that it's all rumour and shouldn't be taken seriously, but is it theoretically achievable?

Probably depends on the specific lens.

Look in the mount / 102 chip, you can without too many problems, but the 2mm to 3mm at the bottom to the side to come HP 97 very close to the electrical lens contact, there may even overlap.
