I was an inch away from buying the HMC until I downloaded this footage.. is this really raw footage? It's horrible. The HF-S100's AVCHD footage is 10 times cleaner. Can someone confirm this is really 1080 max settings..

edit: kay, that sounded harsh. I meant horrble in terms of compression artifacting. The color and lowlight indoor performances are nice.
I did more searching and it does seem like this is indead an HMC trait. IF the AVCHD implementation in the HF-S100 is any indication of what is to come in Canons prosumer tapless future, then look out!

I have had this camera for about 3 months now and I can honestly say the footage is cleaner than my origianl HVX in terms of noise and I have never seen any compression in my images no matter what I have tried.

MPEG-4 H.264 compression is really hard for most hardware to play back so many editing suites play a low quality preview. This is what happened the first time I played a clip in premiere it looked like crap. I then turned on high quality preview mode and it looked awesome.

Absolutely unequivocally completely and thoroughly agreed.

You can get compression artifacts in HE mode, but if you're shooting PH mode it's really robust.

Totally agree, I've seen people make this same mistake repeatedly.

This fellow is touring the country preaching the goodness of AVCHD and the 150. He has a dvd with some samples and comparisons to HDV. He would probably send you one if you asked nicely.

I can also attest to the quality of this camera and its been a solid performer for over 6 months. Its cleaner, less smear, and overal a better image than my original HVX.

I think the first post is a bit of a FUD statement.

I watched clip #41 and see none of the artifacts you are complaining about

note sure which number it is, but it's most noticeable in the outdoor shot at 24p, 1/48 shutter, when he pans across the railing and to the sky. If you look at the raling you can see all the compression noise. Looking into the sky, you can see it there as well.

hmm.. let me recheck it again when I get home.. I'll post some screengrabs to show what I"m talking about in a few.

Here's what I mean, from clip #81, notice all the compression? I didn't scale these up, just straight crops from a screengrab.
