Is this after effects?

That can be done in AE or Finalcut, or most any editor.
Just some pans with keyframes and circle masks.
Looks like effort went into it, and tweeking always takes time
so I would have to say, if you like the final product, and it is
in your budget, go for it.

Those effects look like they're out of the box from Apple Motion. I'm not sure exactly, but I've seen that brush stroke thing in Final Cut Pro.

LOL, looks like we posted about the same time, Hawk.

Thanks. I know for a fact that DVDSP has a template that looks alot like this...

Let me check into Motion...

can be done using a feathered mask in AE and then lock the layer to a null object or the background plate. However you use AE

Definitely looks like Motion. I've barely used it but it looks like Apple presets, meaning, that would take about an hour at the most to select the footage and put it together.

It doesnt matter how much time or effort it takes.
If you like something, and its in your budget, then that should be good enough for you.
You arnt paying for the job, your paying for the person, all their experince and so on. And if they bought a template, then its theirs to use for the job.

You dont haggle at bestbuy because you know the 90 phone charger only costs 1$ to make. If its what you want, and you can afford it, you but it. It you cant afford it, you look at other places, maybe they have a china made rip off, the quality is lower, but it works just the same.

I never said anything to the contrary.

Though if you are using a template for the client, you should make it clear - otherwise you're being intentionally misleading. "If you like something it's good enough" isn't an excuse.

I don't think you should tell them its a template, because that missleads. They will think, 'what, I could just pay 40$ online instead of paying this schmuck?'.

You dont inform clients that, oh I got this method from this site, and then I bought footage from this stock site, and then I got stuck so I used this script from that guy.

Once you buy a template, its yours, a tool that you own, just like your computer, and your software.

I think it's far more misleading to suggest that it's your work, whereas all you did was pay $40 for a template and spend an hour or so adjusting it.

It ain't art. It's work.

Do you ask your auto mechanic if his plan to fix your transmission is original? No, because he's the one with the experience and the tools and the know-how.

Take a more interesting example, such as a plastic surgeon. What if one of his tools is robot-guided? Or, what if the shape of nose he plans for your rhinoplasty was in his text book?

Templates a useful for 2 things.
1. Quick turnaround low budget jobs.
2. Dissecting/reverse engineering to learn a technique.

If all of your work is template based then your reel is template based. When production companies look at reels that are loaded with templates and tutorials they move on to the next candidate - "Nothing new to see here". You'll never improve your skill set if you don't step away from the paint by numbers kit.
