Is this a new HVX200?

Misleading indeed. It almost got my hopes up. :P
Though I can't help wondering why they would type "In the professional sphere Panasonic already realized the technology of record on SD" if Panasonic isn't going to make a camera for the more professional market that records AVCHD to SD-cards anytime soon. I mean, the HDC-SD1 is a consumer camera by the looks of it.

Panasonic is going to make a camera for the more professional market that records AVC-HD to SD cards. We just don't know when.

Ah, I hope they make a camera like that in the $3000-4000 price range so it can compete with Canon and Sony's new additions.
This question has probably been asked many many times but is it realistic to think that Pansonic will announce something like this during Q1 next year? What are the speculations?

Jan said that they will make an AVC-HD camera ("they" being Panasonic Broadcast, not Panasonic Consumer). But no indication as to when, or what it will be.

Sounds promising. I sure hope it will not be one of those 2/3" CCD several tens of $k cameras. :)
But one wonders if they would make a top of the line broadcast camera (think 2/3" CCD several tens of $k camera) that records AVCHD. I've read somewhere around here that those sort of cameras would record AVC-Intra or something. So if Jan said it would record AVCHD it might be the middle child between DVX100 and HVX200 he's talking about?

Jan's a she. :)

And that would be my bet. I've lobbied until I'm blue in the face for an HVX100; basically take the DVX as-is, put in the HVX chipset, pull out the tape drive and replace it with some SD card slots for AVC-HD. I think it'd be a huge hit.

I don't expect to see AVC-HD on their top-end broadcast cameras; they'll go with intraframe for that (DVCPRO-HD and AVC-Intra). But for the low end handheld cameras, which get used for long interviews and such, it might be a great little complement. AVC-HD is not going to be perfect, it's a long-GOP 4:2:0 interframe compression system just like HDV is, but with some significant advantages over HDV. I think that if people are satisfied with today's HDV, they should be thrilled with what AVC-HD will be able to do. And it is to that group that I think an AVC-HD "HVX100" would be most appealing.

But it's all just a suggestion. I haven't heard anything back from them at all about what their plans are for AVC-HD, other than when Jan said "we will build an AVC-HD cam."

We'll see. nVidia and ATI are putting AVC decoder chips on their graphics cards, so it may be a lot easier to edit than we think. But as no NLE supports that format yet, I don't know how to answer that other than -- we'll see. Vegas will have AVC-HD support in the Spring.

I hope at least do an official update to include framerates in the menu under 12fps instead of having to hack...would be nice. Any word anyone?

Sorry Barry, my mind slipped. Where I come from Jan is a he. :)

You know what would be a nice feature on the "HVX100"? Variable bitrate. They already have it on their SD1. I think you can chose from 6, 9 or 13mbps.
I've heard that AVCHD is more efficient than HDV, so AVCHD would look just as good as HDV on a lower bitrate than HDV. That's why I think it would be nice to have many bitrates to chose from in a camera like this, so you could chose a bitrate that's even higher than HDV to produce better results if you can afford more space.

And of course, variable framerate would also be a pretty nice feature. Instead of pimping a DVX, wouldn't it be better to just take an HVX200 and replace the P2 slots with SD slots?

Certainly not. long-GOP is useful for some circumstances, but it's in no way a replacement for a good solid frame-discrete compression system! No way would I give up 4:2:2 frame-discrete compression in exchange for long-gop 4:2:0.

So I could see AVC-HD as an add-on to an HVX maybe, but as a direct replacement for it? I'm sure some would buy it, but not the pros who care about the integrity of their footage.

I think an HVX with a side-order of AVC-HD would be brilliant; you could choose frame-discrete for when you need it, and you could choose AVC-HD for when you need long-form recording more than your cards will hold. Keep the P2 slots and everything as-is, but hey, there's already an SD slot there, so why not allow AVC-HD recording to that? (and to the P2 cards too, but the point is to get a cheap easily-distributed media).

I think an AVC-HD DVX would be a good move for Panasonic, it would let them compete at the price point of the FX7 and seriously undercut the XHA1. For those who are looking to go HDV, AVC-HD is like a super-HDV. But for those of us who don't want HDV, why would we want to take a step back?

I wasn't talking about actually replacing the HVX200. What I meant was to just make an equal camera with the only differences being the slot and the recording format, and then of course possibly make it cheaper than the HVX so it could compete with Canon XH A1 and Sony V1U/FX7. I think Panasonic should make this camera more of a little brother to the HVX200 instead of a big brother to the DVX. Mostly becuase variable frame rate would be possible with SD cards (I think?) and variable frame rate is one of the main features of the HVX. I might be so very wrong though because I don't know if AVCHD will allow variable frame rates?
