Is this a good deal?

I have to opportunity to purchase a Canon 7D kit with 28-135mm IS USM F/3.5-5.6 lens for
$2,099 Canadian. I would be picking it up locally. It's new in the box, with the receipt from
Best Buy.

He also has a number of Sandisk Ultra II 8 GB flash cards for sale. Are these good for shooting
HD video? My understanding is you should only use the Extreme III's.

I'd like to jump on this if people agree this is a good deal.

Thanks.

Peter

P.S. With the current exchange rate, that's $2,011.24 USD

I did a search and answered my own question about CF cards. Looks like the general consensus is that Ultra IIs work great. No need to spend the extra cash on Extreme IIIs.

However, I still need advice on if $2,099 is a good deal for this kit.

Please help. I'll have to make a decision today.

Thanks.

It's a pretty good deal, if you like the lens. It does cover a good range, but a constant aperture lens is always nice. For now, I'm considering keeping it simply due to the range and the IS is nice.

In Canada its a good price, but I purchased mine in the States (body only), as I already had that lens. I use Extreme IV's and Extreme III's with my 7D but have also used the Ultra II's with no issues, as my backups.

I'd jump on it if I were you,

Kegan

Thanks for the advice Kegan.

If I do end up picking it up, we'll have two for Betrayal Fest :)

How are you recording sound to yours? Do you have a Beachtek or perhaps the Zoom?

Peter

I have the Zoom H4n and I love it. For interviews, the on-recorder stereo mics are great, but of course the quality increases significantly when you attach a lav or shotgun depending on your situation.

Just clap or sometimes I use a clapboard to slate sound and it's good to go.

What's the DOF like with the 28-135mm?

I agree that I'd like to purchase a nice prime like a 50mm 1.4 - but to start, will that lens suffice?

If not, I'll have to factor another lens into the cost.

Peter

It's decent - there's a video around her somewhere with some plane footage shot with it and it looks really good. It's also a nice carry around lens for photos - nice color reproduction. I mean it is a little slow for my tastes, but it should suffice for now.

Remember that a 50mm will change to closer to an 85mm on the 7D,

Kegan

For interviews, I would head in the direction of the Sigma 30mm. Browse around the 7D footage/stills section. I can show you a brief interview I shot with a 50mm if you'd like to see if it would work for you.

That is a nice lens to have regardless though,

Kegan

[FONT=&quot]How would you compare these two lenses.

There are two 7D kits I can buy for $2,100. One has the 18x135 the other the 28x135

I know the 18x35 is more expensive, but given the choice, which kit would you go for?

Thanks.

Peter

Well, the 18-135mm IS more expensive yes, because of the additional range that you get. I have only used the 28-135mm so can only speak from that experience with regards to that lens.

The 18-135 seems like its a good lens because of additional range, but its no faster.

Pros:

- 28-135mm is an EF lens, can be used on FF bodies

Cons:

- Not as much range for the same price

If you have a chance, I'd try it out...but if you have to buy today, I would probably take a chance on the 18-135mm.

Sorry to not have been much more help,

Kegan

I went with the 18-135, simply because 28 isn't really wide enough on an APS-C sized body. 28's fine, but 18 is a lot wider, and at the same price... why not?
