Is the Tamron 17-50 wide enough?

Hello! I've ordered my Tamron 17-50 and since I've been making do with the nifty fifty so far, I'm eager to try it out. A forthcoming project will require quite extreme wide angle shots, and I was wondering if the Tamron (at 17mm) would be able to pull them off, or if it will be necessary to get the Tokina 11-16? I've gone out to camera shops to try these lenses out but they're both extremely hard to come by in the UK!

Does anybody have any sample footage of the Tamron at its widest point in an indoor location, or would anybody be good enough to upload some for me?

Thanks, Dom

There is some barrel distortion visible at 17mm so you may not wish to keep it at the very end. What's happening that you need "quite extreme wide angle shots"?

I have the 17-50. Had the 50mm for a while.

Now I just want the 11-16 along with the 17-50. That seems like it'll be wide enough for me.

I appreciate the links Michael - I've seen all those videos already, but I couldn't be sure that they were shot at 17mm....

Hi Jordan - I'm shooting inside a car, so we're talking extremely confined spaces. I'm also looking to achieve some rather artsy shots for some heavily styled short films and dramatic pieces (shooting a lot of timelapsed landscape shots, a few intentionally distorted shots, lots of 'Wes Anderson' style shots)

An example of the sort of look I want to be able to achieve:

11-16 is super wide. i'm loving mine. i can run with my 7d handheld and the footage comes out useable. 17 is still plenty wide for most things, i just needed wider for real estate photos, and it makes for awesome action shots

Dom, if you want people in your foreground, you're probably going to have to shoot them at 16mm with the Tokina. Try doing what you want with the Tamron from 18-20. If you can't, know that the Tokina is not going to give you that much more width.

Gotta say no because i'm factoring in the crop factor of 1.6. So an 11mm becomes almost an 18!

I shot my most recent video with the 11-16 (click my blog or vimeo my name) and I am really happy how the shots came out. Didn't think it was to wide or notice distortion. Check it out and see if it's a fit for you.

The Tokina 11-16mm is also 2.8 all the way through the lens. I got it because it was fast and wide, not just one or the other.

I second that. The 17-55mm Canon or Nikon 17-55mm is pretty awesome at most things.
I would like a Tokina for certain things but I LOVE my Canon 17-55 f/2.8.

Well I got a good deal I think, so I can always sell it on without a loss if it's not really worth having as an accompaniment to the Tamron. Will post some tests - anybody have any requests of what they'd like to have compared?
