Is the Iscorama worth it? Dispelling the myth... or "Let's Shoot it out!"

Here's a close up focus test of the AG-LA7200. It's pretty bad... but makes up for it in all it's other aspects, so long as the shot isn't literally a foot away from the adapter.

This is the closest my 50mm can focus on an object. Will a diopter cure this problem? Or will it magnify it?

you can't really use a diopter with the panasonic because the diopter has to be in front and the panny has no filter thread, the only way to do it is with a mattebox and 4x4 diopter or I suppose you could gaff a 4x4 diopter to it.

yeah they're special they have the name iscorama etched on them

LOL - unless they can confirm that it makes my iscorama 42 focus from close to infinity. I am not going to get suckered into that.
By the way anybody got hold of a 0.5 diopter and tested it yet?

Love the anamorphic look but can you just shoot with a standard wide lens and put a letterbox on it?

anamorphic change perspective/angle of your footage ,its not possible to do this with wide angle lens ,its not like fisheye perspective it just looks WIDE & BIG BUDGET when shot properly with anamorphics.Epic ? I think its accurate word for that.
Also when you put anamorphics on f1.8 50mm then you still have the same DOF but just wider picture, with regular lenses your depth of field is deeper when lens is wider. You still can have shallow dof and very wide shots with anamorphics.

deadfish, I think I posted already that I was able to find a lone 0.5X close up diopter lens in Series IX (series nine) for a good price through a used camera store. Don't expect to find many listed on ebay but it wouldn't hurt to look I guess once in a while.

The 0.5x is the right size lens to work with my Isco 42 for shooting a nice medium close up on a subject.

I'm waiting on stepup and retaining rings to shoot a real test, but it works, trust me. You want one. I've spent more on adapters and retaining rings than I have on the diopters, I think. But it could be worse.

Who here is still looking for one? I can keep trying my sources but I'd like to know who to pass tips on to.

I also found a Tiffen set of 1, 2 and 4 close up diopters used in 72mm for less than $40 but they have not arrived yet either. It takes time to get all this gear sorted out. I'd like to find a cheap 72mm and maybe take it to the eyeglasses shop to see if they could cut in in half to make a split-field diopter.

we need a faq

we need a faq

So, how's that anamorphic/ vDSLR FAQ we were all going to make coming along?

ha ha.

I feel sorry for people just starting to explore all this. All the good info is scattered over many long threads.

FWIW, I managed to cobble together a semi-stable mount for a large anamorpich projector lens from a 35mm projector and I shot some test shots in the overcast light we're enjoying in my locale. The lens I have is destroyed by fungus so it's not the greatest example of what is possible but it does make a coherent image and even manages to focus at a reasonably close distance with as good of a quality as it seems to exhibit at any range.... not sure what that tells us but I'll post some pics soon. I want to print up some better focus charts and shoot when the sun comes out before making any real judgements. But people have made assertions that you can't get a long throw projector lens to focus at closer than 50 feet or so, and that isn't the case, I've found. With my example it was more like ten or twelve feet.

ag-la7200 test shot with longer lens

ag-la7200 test shot with longer lens

I shot some stuff while on location scouting with the AG-la7200 but with a 85mm 1.8 canon lens instate of a 50mm lecia 1.4. Which should be long enough to avoid the blurring of the edges.
Also cut in with shots using a lscorama with a +1 diopter for closeups.
