Is the HV30 a good choice for me ?

Ive had a dvx, panny gs320 and now im looking for something smaller with hd but good. Here are some my questions, first I dont have an HD tv or monitor and im wondering if HD still looks good on a standard tv(even though I will buying an HD tv). Second, My computer is only a 2.4 with a gig of ram, will it be able to work with the HD ? Third, If I shoot with the hv30 on standard definition setting does the picture still look good ? thanks

1). Yes, the hd footage will look fine on an sd display... in fact possibly arguably better, since downscaling will help conceal artifacts, grain, soft focus, etc.

2). Is your processor just a single core? If so, you'll probably want to look at an intermediate codec for editing like cineform... either way you'll probably want to upgrade your ram to at least 2gb for working with hd footage.

Some other thoughts: If you're used to the lowlight performance of the dvx you will be horribly disappointed with the hv30. I own both, and didn't realize just exactly how sensitive the dvx was before I owned the hv30. Shooting indoors will either involve copious amounts of light or lots of gain.

Jon my desktop is a dual core. I am looking at upgrading like you said to 2 gigs of ram and getting a new video card. Do you think that will help. i cant wait to get this new camera.

Yeah, definitely go with 2 gigs of ram. A new graphics card will probably make little to no difference in the editing ability of your system.

Good luck with the new cam. It's fun!

Hay mate

My HV30 is 4-5 days old :D

My desktop is quad core, 2gb with 8800gt graphic card. I can edit it with ease.
The camera is really nice and I did a test the day I got it. Here's the video:
