is the GH2 a waste of time in PAL land?

the 30 minute restriction has to do with EU custom laws. The GH1+2 would fall under a different category if they could shoot more and Matsushita would have to pay extra money.

I already proposed them elegant solution to this problem.
But it looks like no one actually listen :-)

its a problem they ( panasonic ) can not solve, its politics, customs and copyright laws. It has partially to do with a European law that takes a few cents for each writeable CD or DVD or cassette sold, to collect a compensation for the copyright losses by artists and producers of music and film. Its difficult for me to explain in english since the I only know the terminology in german. It is also based an a copyright treaty of Rome which USA did not sign. You solved the problem by making the hack :-) The reason why panny is more or less silent on the topic is probably also because they themselves dont care about these restrictions and see them as a nuisance.

I am not talking about hack. It can not be solution.
I mean real fully legal solution by shipping ALL cameras with 30min limit, but outside Europe include big flyer with simple instructions how to make it work more than 30min.
And making same instructions work for european cameras (but do not include this information inside box) :-)
Fully legal :-)

Yeah the time limit is a pain but it's workable, the lack of 25p is not so workable, anyone tried mixing 24p GH2 and GH1 or any other PAL cam 25p footage with wild audio? it's not gonna sync! That's a total F' up for many EURO event shooters who liked working with these cheap little GH cams...

Ah well, moving on I just hope it get's sorted and we get full raster 25p at some point like the 24p, I'll take all the other limitations the little GH2 has, but Progressive shooting at full quality is a must, until then it's back to work without the GH2 for many, shame!

If you have completely broken feedback - it is not weird :-)
Panasonic corp. system is just not working right. But even with this they manage to be better compared to many others.

I stopped working with 24p here in PAL land, because its very hard to mix it with 25p. The soft strobo is worst enough in 24p, converting it to 25p will not improve this. That means however the lack of the higher data rate and that means further, that I am incrementally dissatisfied with the "system" GH2 in PAL land.

yes I even tried to film off a video screen to save some footage.....then gave it back! GH2 is NOT for professional use in PAL countries. GH13 rulez!

Personally if the GH2 shoots 24p and can hold a shutter of 50 during, I'm set. Keep in mind though, I say this since I've taken another job at night that pays for my life, and don't have to put up with filming for anyone but myself or something I like.

Last year I wanted an AF100, cause I needed to make a living. Now I just wanna make movies. So yeah, 24p at a shutter of 50 sounds ideal to me. Anyone wanna buy a super8 camera?

Short question to experts, if i have hmc151, GH13 and GH2, will shooting everything at 720 50p give me any problems in the FCP?

It's a marketing decision for price alone. Clearly the HMC 151 and AF101 don't have these stupid restrictions, but then they cost more. Perhaps Panasonic could offer a more expensive version in Europe (everything else is more expensive here anyway!) that pays the taxes and allows us to use it properly. But then I guess the majority of uses don't need the longer record times anyway.

Another solution is to have an unlock key. Buy the unit as-is, then call Panasonic, pay the fee (that covers the tax) and they give you the the magic unlock key. This can be unique to every camera since it would be based on the serial number.

Besides... Europe may be the biggest market for PAL, but other countries such as Australia are getting punished too. For those who are not good at geography, Australia is not in Europe and unless somethings drastic happens, never will be ;)

Even so, the time limit is of no concern if the camera can't shoot 25p anyway. As I said before, +1 lost customer.

Imagine the GH2 came with only 25p, 50i and 60i and a 29:59 limit on recording.

Remember you can slow 25p to 24p.... so how many NTSC people will buy it now? I think not many...... ;)

It's 25p or bust in PAL land, which btw covers MORE of the world's population than NTSC does! Panasonic screwed up here. Please Panasonic, let me know where and when I can buy an unrestricted GH2, without the 30 min limit and with 25p and I'll BUY ONE. Until then, no chance.

"NTSC people" don't need 30p?
They only got 24p, 60i and 720 60p and we only have 24p, 50i and 720 50p.

At least taking 24p and turning it in to 30p is a bit more rational for them. They do it for movies all the time. 25p to 30p is much harder.

They have 24p instead... just because 25p happens to be half 50i it doesn't make it the equivalent of 30p. 30p has a video-ish smooth look to it, whereas 25p looks just like 24p.

what's really Ironic is the GH2 seems to be very hard to come by in the USA but here in Europe is everywhere yet many potential users are not buying it due mainly to the 25p issue!

It's such an amazing little thing though apart from that one crippled feature, I got one 2nd hand from a friend for a good deal so decided to go with it for personal projects and non multi cam sync stuff, I will probably shoot 24p and conform in cinema tools to 25p and re-speed any wild sync sound, the res, low light, lack of moire and ETC combined with the price and tiny form factor still blows my mind! Stick a 20mm pancake on it and then put it in your pocket.... Oh but the 25p (almost forgot there;)

Things just got better for the GH2, it outperformed the AF100 on the resolution charts and with less Moire, according to a German test. News on the AF100 board...
Someone please hack this camera immediatedly, so that we can get even higher bit rates and 25p.

At least the AF101 has 25p ;) (not to mention 1080/50p!). Resolution means nothing if you don't have the frame rate.

Waiting for!!
