is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

It's a tough choice when your sinking your own hard earned money into it!! I've been really leaning towards the DVX100a. Not sure about the new Sony Z1U. I also like the PD-170 but I want the 24p. I doubt I have anything headed for the big screen for awhile so the DVX would work great for some smaller things I'd like to do and if by chance I would it would have a camera that can do the job. Thanks Barry

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

The Z1U is the same basic camera as the FX1, but with a lot more features (like XLR's for audio, switchable 50i and 60i, Hyper-gain, etc) but it doesn't change the fundamental issues that stop it from being the ultimate indie filmmaker camera: no 24p, and MPEG-2 compression. If you want an interlaced HD camera, the Z1 looks phenomenal. A little pricier though, street price is expected to be around $5,000.

They're all excellent cameras, you just have to pick which one serves your needs best. If you're getting the camera to make money with, buy now and go make some bucks; then when the "ultimate" camera comes around (if ever), you can always sell the one you have and upgrade. If you're not planning on making money with it, I recommend waiting as long as you possibly can before sinking all your money into a high-tech purchase like this... technology changes so rapidly that you may find yourself kicking yourself for leaping in too soon... IF someone comes out with something better. But that's a big IF. So don't buy it until you have to, and when you have to, buy the best there is at the time and don't look back.

Within restrictions MPEG-2 is a codec/stream with room for interpretations, and they can tune it up so it will be more up to their specs. The FX1/Z1 MPEG-2 can be different.

Making some money would be great, but it's not my main goal. It might help to buy more stuff and that is always a good thing. I might wait a couple of months and see what comes out. If I do make some money then I can get the next new camera. But for now the DVX looks good. But I'll give the panasonic people alittle more time.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Not just Panasonic, but JVC as well... they've been making a little noise about a new HDV model, maybe they'll come up with something impressive... all we can know for sure is, the longer you can wait, the more choices you'll likely have!

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Don't know, need more testing, but it looks like I will be returning my FX1 tomorrow. If I get sharper images in DV SD with my old VX2000 than HDV with my new FX1, I'm doing something wrong or there is something wrong with the camera. I will test another 24 hours and then decide. Really, I might add a few Euros and get the DVX100 or stay with the VX2000. The high res images and frame grabs from the FX1 look like interpolation. Same effect you get from upsizing images in potoshop, or worse, using digital zoom on toy cameras. That is not what I call HDV.

By the way, now that I have the FX1 I can say one thing for sure. That frame grab that has been going around the FX1 forums, the Man's Face with beard, I can tell you that's NOT from the FX1. It's just not possible, the camera doesn't have half that resolution. That's probably a frame grab from some real HDTV camera posted on the net, and people confuse Sony's HDV with HD and say it's a Sony grab.

I downsize frames to make them match the sharpness of DV frames. Until now, I have to downsize at lower vertical resolution than DV PAL. I assume the FX1 has about 500 effective vertical resolution.

The DVX has about 576 in PAL I think?

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Yes it does have.

By the way, Princigalli, I have not been able to understand how a so-called HD footage could look less impressive than an DV SD footage. It would have been really nice to see some footage. However, if your fears are correct that FX1 is doing some kind of interpolation, I must say Sony has once again proved that 'Its a Sony'.

man...over the years this company has not been able to deliver to their customers ....a single time...whatever they promise initially.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Properly shot and displayed on an HD television, the HDV mode of the FX1 is much higher resolution than any DV camera.

When displayed on a standard-def television, there's not any advantage to the HDV source... a DVX or XL2 are capable of delivering more resolution than a television can handle. But if you're shooting for interlaced HDTV display, the FX1 is much higher res than the DVX, XL2, or any standard-def camera. Note, that doesn't necessarily mean the picture looks better, it just means the FX1 is capable of resolving more detail than any standard-def camera.

"The Bundle is not a giveaway, it is marketing, trying to find a package that offers increased value to the ultimate consumer, you guys. It is a new bundle with a new case and a bigger battery. The DV Rack software is not for free, it will be included with a number of items and be promoted as a pretty nice little bundle, called Serious Production,(hope you don't mind the play on the words. )

The DVX100A lives!

Best regards,

Jan "

can you give some more details on this bundle? I am in need of a new 24p camera and may go with the DVX if I can get this bundle soon. I called around to several vendors including EVS but they don't know anything about it.

thanks
Marty

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Jan, if you haven't already done so elsewhere, would you please clarify your statement regarding what this year holds for the DVX. As you can gather from reading the various posts on this site, some have interpreted that there will be no new model, only the dvx100b which is not different other than a manufacturing detail, while others interpret that this does not exclude the possibilty of a new model in the around $5000 price range. I know you're limited in what you can say, but can you clear this up, just a little?

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

As a new Panasonic customer, I love the fact of having Jan who works for Panasonic reading what we have to say and how we feel about their products... Keep Up the good work Jan and Panasonic.
The Same goes for the people that have put this web site together. You'll all get the best results out of all this put together,

A Very Happy Customer!

PS waiting for a newer DVX100a version as soon as possible! As I am looking to buy a few more Camera's, but just waiting for the NEW model.
