is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

If its days are numbered who cares. I already own a DVX, my clients request a DVX, it will continue to earn $$$ for me, its technology is far from obsolete or outdated, and HDV blows. If i was forced by market changes or client requests, then I would simply buy another camera to suppliment my business. It's absurd to think that with all the DVX'S currently in use that suddenly everyones going to sell there cameras and move up to a newer technology thats so far away from general consumer acceptance.
DVX LIVES !!

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

whether panny comes out with a hddvx200 or dvx100b they will more than likely repeat the same situation where they made a 100 and then later 100a so i will wait for the hddvx200a or dvx100c.

I said it on another board and I'll say it here:

As long as you're getting really good quality images and clean sound... No camera is obsolete.[/quote]

And there endeth the lesson.

Well said. :)

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

As long as DVD as we know it now is the final format for a project, the DVX lives.

When the hand-wringing and arm-twisting between the Electronic industry super-titans who will be deciding the NEXT big format (DVD-HD, with several competing technologies) finally ends in a clear choice, then newer HD cams might take over. But right now low-end HD cams suck compared to uprezzed DVX footage (see Barry G.'s DVD), and high-end HD cams are still several times the price of the DVX and likely to stay that way.

Very true.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

People (clients, general viewers, etc.) watch video for the content, not the technical quality of the picture. While some HD might catch your breath at first (I've only seen it in stores), eventually, your perceptual system gets used to it and you're only watching for content. The only time the technical quality of the picture becomes an issue is when it's bad. Then it is a distracting factor and the viewer may be a bit annoyed, or feel like they are watching a sub par production.

But give me a producer and camera crew with a so-so camera doing an outstanding job with all of the production values of a picture over someone with a Varicam who thinks a great camera is all you need for a professional looking production. The former will be a much more enjoyable presentation to watch - I guarantee it.

The DVX will not be obselete for a long, long time (if ever).

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Well, if Panasonic is going to come out with a DVX100B and its not high def, they should at least throw in the 16:9 chips, increase the zoom range to 16X and increase the resolution to be on the level of the XL2. This will keep us happy until the Panny guys and girls sort out all the ins and outs of producing a 24P 16:9 High Def DVX. High Def should be the next level of the DVX but to keep us happy while we wait (no longer than 18 months please), please up the resolution, increase the zoom range and give us native 16:9. Everything else in this camera rocks and there is no need to change anything else.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

I don't think the 100b is meant to be any type of upgrade. It sounds like it's just a change in manufacturing process.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

I don't see the DVX going anywhere anytime soon... It's such an amazing piece of equipment. The quality is just awesome.

I mean, I know people who are looking for Sony VX1000's to make their snowboarding and skateboarding videos.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

I sold my TRV-900 on e-bay to afford the DVX100 and then the "A". Now I'm looking for a 900 as a family camcorder and they are still in demand six years after they came out. they're still getting around $1200 on E-bay. I'm sure the dvx100 will fall into that category.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Is there ANY expectation that Panisonic will put out a 16x9 native version of the DVX? I'm purchasing a camera for a short film, and am planing on using the DVX and the animorphic adapter. It would probably simplify some of the shoot to not have to triple check the focus every time.

very hard to believe that we will witness a 16:9 version of the DVX in the next year. DVX and the anamorphic is still the best combination around, imo, just test and practice.. and goodluck!

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

I do need a native 16x9 version fast. And the 16x lens like the DVC30 with smooth zoom. I need good control of iris and focus too. Europe is not ready for HD but we ARE for 16x9. Shooting documentary with anamorphic lens in combination with a DVX is so ehh cumbersome ...old fashion.

And looking at a squeezd image is not a way to shoot and compose. There are a lot of 3-chip 500 dollar cams out there. Smaller chips but they went up with there quality. DVX cant stay like it is for another year. We go XL2 or Z1 and find a way to edit and dwn res. They (Sony) are still tuning the Z1 software...

So bring up the new king, be it a low cost DVCpro-HD or a DVX100b.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

In my search for a camera I just want to be able to do the 24p and 16:9. I'm really not that worried about the High def. It would be nice at some point. I would like the DVX without having to buy a anamorphic lens etc. I had a XL1s and it was a great camera but it was kind of heavy. The DVX100a is what I really like. Can some of you tell me if you would trust this camera for indie films with the hope to be blown up for the big screen?

I hope in the next few months panasonic comes out wuth a updated DVX that has 16:9. If not the anamorphic lens will have to do. So is that set up pretty workable? My budget is pretty tight so I am doing a lot of searching about these cameras.

Any help you can give me would be great.

Re: is the end in sight for the DVX ???

Unfortunately the specific combination you want isn't really available yet.

You want native native 16:9, high-def, affordable, and 24p... the FX1 will give you three of those, the XL2 gives you two, and the DVX gives you two.

The FX1 is 16:9, hd, and affordable, but not 24p, and not necessarily suitable for 24p-style shooting.

The XL2 has 16:9 and 24p, but is quite a bit more expensive, and configured with a manual lens it's even more expensive.

The DVX has 24p, is affordable, etc, but doesn't offer "native" 16:9, and using the anamorphic adapter can deliver great results but it's a *lot* more work than something like the FX1 or XL2 w/manual lens.

Can some of you tell me if you would trust this camera for indie films with the hope to be blown up for the big screen?
Trust it? Absolutely. I have blown DVX footage up to film and viewed it on the big screen, and it looks good to great (depending on where you're sitting in the theater). I haven't had the chance to see FX1 or XL2 footage on the big screen yet.
