Hello. I want to shoot a mini series action thriler for tv. I want to try to run it throgh some stations and see my chances. I know it could be slim; but trying never hurts. I want to know if the dvx can produce an acceptable picture that when the producer will look at the finished product they would'int tell the difrence. Please let me know. Thank you all.

Yes DVX is good for SD Broadcast TV. It is used on so many shows. Always Sunny in Philidalphia was shot exclisivly with it. Not SDX900 with some DVX it was all DVX well except the open. So yes. But you have to remeber it has to look good. and has to have a good storie. It can't look like it was shot by someone who just shoots home video. It needs to be shot by someone that has the experence to make miniDV look good.

wow thankx so much. I have been taking classes and did many test shots and also shorts for my community. I think I can do it. I just wanted to make sure that when they look at the finished product ill have atleast a small shot. Wow u just made my day. Thank you alot. I'm almost done with the script for the 12 episode. When im done filming ill put the first episode up and hopefuly get feedback. Im starting filming in january. we got permits and insurence is being worked out aswell.Thankx again

Yeah just remeber it is all about the piolet. If you have the budget for all 12 + 1 piolet. Most shows are 13 epesiods, You should think about putting most your money into the piolet. or maybe just shot two of the 13. You have to rember that studios like to change things. Location, actors, stories, endings, even they look and feel of the show. So even though DVX is a grate camera and is use. Dosen't mean the studio dosn't want it shot on an SDX900 or HD or Digi Bata. So if you are sirious and I think you are. work on a good piolet. Hire a good Gaffer rent a grip truck even think about hireing a DP who has done this before. There are some really good ones on this board. IF you have a good concepet and a kick but piolet the studio will buy it pay for the production for you to write it and even get help for the writing. Just make the piolet and then worry about saleing it and then make the next 12

Also you might want to check the network and see what their required standards are for broadcast, a lot will require a final transfer to dvcpro or digibeta.

They usually have a submission process also, so before you pitch best to know what it is and follow it. But its most likely that they will want you to do some sort of budgeting process before you submit.

Definitely check with the stations you plan on submitting to first. The broadcast standard (yes, there is actually a standard) is pretty rigid, but many stations will accept less. Like ncje said, they may make you dub it out to a DVCPRO or DigiBeta tape, and they'll definitely have some fairly strict submission guidelines.

Thanks so much guys for all ur help. I will definitley look into that stuff. As funy as it sounds my nextdoor neibor is a DP. He was a DP for vivid porn. Now there stuff is usaly not that pleasing and demanding for perfection but he worked in other projects as well. I hope he has a dub. If he does that can cut my costs. How much do u think a machinelike that costs about? I am willing to even take out loans for it because i want to make sure I will give it my all and have minimal flaws even for the long run. Thanks again guys for all your help. I apreciate it so much.

Umm.. sounds like you still have a long way to go and a lot of reaserch to do. (as we all have) And you sound eager enoguh to keep at it which is a good thing.

A "dub" is a copy - a Duplicate (shottened "a dub").
Now in the context of this topic, we are talking about a DVCPRO or DIGIBETA deck to make the copies from yoru DV master.
A DVCPRO-50 deck is somewhere over $20k
And a Digibeta Deck will run you well over $40k

Needless to say, those arn't something that you will buy, but rather you'd take your master to a duplication company who woudl make the dubs for you.

O thanks wow i never knew it was so much. Aperintly he told me he knows somebody who has a deck and does it for a biusness. He said he will ask him how much would transfers cost me. I know i have alot of research to do because afterall I am going to have to compete against other shows that are financed with millions of dollars. I know this might sound like a stupid question. But should i shoot 4:3 for tv the whole way? I guess I am still ahead of my self being I didint even start filming yet. Thank you guys again. I need to do alot of research. I will be using the search tool alot also. Thanks again.

Its a decent little camera and mine has served me well, however if I was buying now I'd go for an HD camera, something like the sony Z1.

Would have to disagree on that one... for a HDV cam wait a month and go with the Canon A1. Also has composite out.
