Is the CION ever going to ship?

Sorry, I wasn't aware that the customer could swap the mounts on the camera after the purchase. I thought once you ordered it with one of the mounting options, then you were locked into that particular one. But if you can order a different mount from AJA sometime down the road, that's awesome. (I agree, adapters are sorta ghetto.)

Not from AJA but from third parties like MTF Services...wonder how many mounts they've sold so far!

And isn't it about time we had a dedicated CION users forum on here? :)

I bought Kinotechnik LCDVF for BMPCC.. It works grat !!! CION have HDMI-out for VF..so no problems there..

I'm surprised not even some random test footage has been uploaded yet; little strange. Doesn't have to be production quality, just anything at all really from those that have one. Or maybe no one has it yet?

I've got some stuff. I just need to cut it. I did a little test short with a few disparate setups. I also have just test shots that are not very interesting at all... maybe I can put up some grabs of them for discussion.

Thank you very much, hscully. To tide us over, how about another video not from it but about it? Jon Thorn explains the delays and design.

Jon Thorn seems like a really good guy, and more importantly he's obviously a film-maker and I agree that the design bears that out...but I think it's possibly the first camera that has died before even a single person has bought one! It's already not competitive, largely because of the FS7 (ie it has less desirable spec but for more money!), and that's a real shame. If they halve the price, or if they double the frame rate that would be a different matter - in fact it's supposed to do 120fps in 4k, what's the status with that? That would be a big deal as at this price that would put it above not just the FS7 but also the F55.
Just my opinion, hopefully I'll be proved very wrong because it would be great to have AJA in the game keeping the others on their toes.

The thing about that video is he really 'exposes' a weakness in his thinking. Burning in colour is just like shooting jpg on a modern stills camera - its over. Yes make nice LUT, Yes display those LUTs, Yes work on Meta to bring those LUTS into the NLE, but burned colour just not give the required flex to deliver high end colour over broad DR scenes - that needs secondaries.

Indeed - the FS7HFR is pretty compromised - compromised 1080 - so 120-4k or Crop240HD would be a major asset.

Just roughly pricing things up, for an FS7 kit with 2 batteries, 2x128gb cards, a Nikon adapter and a shotgun mic I've been quoted under £6,000. For a Cion with same kit you're looking at around £9,000+, I think it needs to be more competitive on price, that might get some more people interested - though even then I reckon 90% or more would go FS7.

Steve

90% will go for the FS7 - but it has to be recognised that the FS7 is really maxing out at 60p for 'proper' work where image quality is a concern - so Cion maybe has a HFR shoe in (?)

(dunno if offboard on the FS7 is better than onboard which is quite moiree above 60)

Yes, that would be great! I'm just interested in seeing any footage at all from the actual release version of the Cion. Literally anything at all with skin tones would be really nice to see. Don't care what it is, just want to see some skin!

Frankly I had hopes that there would be a bit of a buzz, shootouts, tests here and there and generally the kind of marketing one would expect from a camera in this price range. This has not happened, and at this point it makes not difference since NAB is two months away and there are sure to be other things there. Perhaps AJA are holding off with new software and such. I know I am buying a camera in the spring and that is all I know.

Here's a screen grab with human skin from the current version of the Cion.. not graded, Normal Expanded Gamma, Skintones CC Zeiss ZF 50mm 2.8. The skin tones are really good on the Cion. Also notice the beautiful texture in that soft focus background. I think it's pretty unique. ShortPresent.Still001.jpg

Uh, no. Shooting 8-bit would be just like shooting JPEG on a modern stills camera.

When you shoot a raw still the image is presented with proper contrast - but you can still recover highs and lows, when you shoot log and add a lut you get proper contrast you can recover highs and lows, when you shoot a burned in video look you can recover nothing.. just like a jpg. Im sure you are technically right as jpgs are 8bit but burning a look on a vid cam with any colour depth will clip

Yes. There's some but it's really black, black. I didn't really ask her to bring "options." I am not a big fan of black clothing in shots. I didn't grade any of this yet. Pulling the mids up on the ProRes 444 is a dream. The Cion is a little crunchy in the blacks with this gamma but you could pull that up if you wanted to pretty well.

EDIT: I did that on a post on the next page
