Is the CION ever going to ship?

However, there is also the matter of AJA's design/marketing mentality behind the decision to go ahead with such materials, which could have design implications on other parts of the camera
According to AJA rumor they will introduce an organic sensor made from Hamsters. And the camera runs on power from the build in electric eels.

Wow, insinuating that if they use a leather shoulder pad, they must be doing something else that offends you?
You have crossed the line into being a Troll now. A sanctomonious one at that.

Seriously?

Seriously.

Oh come on, it's like asking you if you killed a horse for your avatar image.

No, your question and my question are different, and for two fundamental reasons:
1. a horse didn't have to be killed to make my avatar, while it is a fact that an animal must be killed to make a Cion;
2. the question that I posed asked "why" whereas the question you pose asks "yes/no."

What you asked was not a question, it was a vegan agitprop provocation, and we all know that.

No. My question has nothing to do with diet. I never initiated the issue of diet in any of my posts. I don't really understand why some people are confusing diet with part of a camera.

I am sorry if you think that my question was agitating/provacative, but I merely ask why a factual situation exists.

The answer obviously is NO - there you have it, now let's call it a day and go back to cameras.

Again, I did not ask a "yes or no" question.

However, if you are suggesting that, "no," an animal does not have to be killed to make a Cion camera, you would be wrong. I am sorry if such a fact upsets you and others, but if one is uncomfortable with the truth, perhaps one should be honest with themselves about why they have such feelings, and then act accordingly.

Personally, I don't see why AJA has to use a material that requires an animal to be killed, but perhaps they can shed light on why the do so.

No. I never said that they are doing something else that offends me -- that is a conclusion to which you have jumped. I am not offended by mere misguided design practices.

Seriously, my initial post about cheeseburgers was to like humor at a very detailed thread. Move on man. Go to YouTube and practice being a grammar spelling Nazi.

The he cion is delayed because **** happens. Get over it. Welcome to the world of over promising and under delivering just to make headlines. Entitled little whineing brats the world has become. You want everything yesterday and fully speced out for a weeks pay flipping burgers.

Posted from mu mu iphone where spelling and grammar should just be realized, at not policed.

Though this thread was about the delay in shipping of the Cion, it evolved. For those of us who are seriously interested in buying this camera we have had interesting feedback from Jon Thorn as well as a chance to hear from Hugh Scully who is currently shooting with a Cion provided by AJA. I think the thread is valid and appreciate that the Mods stepped it to preserve it from becoming a waste of time.

OK, for a camera that is supposed to be shipping, very little info around the internet. When the URSA shipped, lots of reviews and tests came out.
I'm sure there is a valid reason, just looking forward to reveiws that are from independent camera operators.

On a technical note as to the construction of electronics in general and motion picture equipment in particular, animal products are used in a number of components deep inside what you might otherwise consider synthetic materials. It would be impossible to create such a device without involving the use of some products that necessitated the harvesting of animals. Just so you know.

Hugh Scully from this group who has posted earlier in the thread has a camera and has begun posting his impressions. I hope that will continue.

Does anyone really think this iteration of "internal" filtration is anything like what people are talking about here? I believe the desire is for a filter wheel like on many cameras of a certain price point or for a certain market/shooting style.
Don't want to appear thick Mitch but would you mind explaining what you mean? I am confused about what you are saying above.

The ARRI behind the lens ND system is rather unique. It involves removing the lens and using a special tool to insert/remove a filter that is held in place in front of the sensor by magnets.

I believe that most people here asking for a lens mount solution that includes ND filtration options, what they want is a filter wheel built into the lens mount. The ARRI solution is much different and I don't think it is at all what people would desire on the CION.

When the FS100 came out with a S35 sensor and no filter wheel, there were many who complained. For a large university bid I worked with Carlos Acosta of Solid Camera on a design concept that included a Nikon lens mount adapter for the FS100 with an integrated filter wheel. It had room for two NDs and one clear (necessary to have in order to maintain flange focal depth, i.e., keep back focus correct). The university decided not to go with the accessory package (which they later regretted), and Carlos' brilliant design never manifested itself.

I don't know if the sensor is close enough to the front face of the body of the camera on the CION to allow for Nikon & Canon mounts to include a filter wheel. It is no small affair to include such a thing and the filters need to be manufactured to a uniform thickness to maintain back focus (far more critical behind then lens then in front). Just from looking at the camera I can tell there's space in a PL mount, but I honestly don't know for other mounts, nor am I in the job position any longer to particularly pursue such a question. I would say that any lens mount with such a build in filter wheel would likely cost upwards of $1000, and that's if you could find someone willing to put in the time to design and construct such an item. When a university is considering buying 100 units then it can be a worthwhile risk to spend man hours on such a design. On the open market for a camera that has yet to prove itself, not so much. It's a chicken & egg waiting game.

Thanks for the explanation Mitch. In my case I am indeed asking for a filter wheel or and adapter for EF or ______ lenses that includes it. As I have mentioned in the past I have my share of BW front of lens NDs and 4x4s for the matte box but a wheel is a shot saver in many situations. My FS 100 has found new life with the FotoDiox Pro Visilex ND Throttle and I have concerns about buying another camera that does not have a wheel or at least an option like the one I have. But the Cion has so many ergonomic and "on paper" technical pluses which is why I am so interested.

J Michael,
The camera dimensions are found at the back of the CION manual (in the Appendix section) on pages 91 through 95.

Width: 117.87mm (4.640 in.) at the widest point - since the body tapers - and 105mm (4.133 in.) at the narrowest point.
Height: 222.3mm (8.751 in.) from the base of the camera to the top of the cold shoe on the top handle.

Length:
284.07mm (11.183 in.) for the body and an additional 43.31mm (1.705 in.) for the PL lens mount for a total length of 327.38mm. (12.888 in.)

I hope this information is helpful,

SJX,
I provided some information about log encoding earlier in this thread. I will re-post some of that text here:

Log profiles are most often applicable when your sensor A/D exceeds your encoding ability. For example, you have a 14-bit A/D and you want to save an 8-bit file (a common case with many of the cameras in the market today). Log acts as a form of compression allowing you to get the 14-bit "mapped" as well as possible into an 8-bit container. Now consider that the CION uses a 12-bit A/D, performs 12-bit processing, and then stores this in a 12-bit container (Apple ProRes 4444).

The camera offers different gamma selections that determine, along with exposure index value selections, the dynamic range. The maximum dynamic range is achieved using the Expanded 1 gamma selection and the EI 250 selection.

I will ask the marketing department to review the website to see if more specifics can be provided.

Thank you for your questions,

I apologize if I have missed other questions in the thread. I'm on my seventh consecutive 14+ hour day and I have to get some sleep now before tomorrow's likely 14+ hour day.

I will do my best to answer things as I can, but because of other commitments, please keep in mind that like yesterday, I may not be able to respond immediately.

I appreciate your patience,
Jon Thorn
