C100: Is the C100+Ninja2 exactly the same quality as the C300?

The C300 seems to have some magic sauce going for itself. Which begs the question, is recording to a C100 to ProRes really the same exact quality as a C300 recording its internal native codec?

Will a brand new Ferrari transport me to the grocery store exactly the same way as a Honda Civic?
In short, yes - but the Ferrari will definitey do a lot more.

Do you just want the car to go to the grocery store?

They are the same sensor though. So I know what you're asking about the same quality, but to modify how you use a C100 (with external recorder etc) vs how you natively use a C300 you're changing a lot.

you'll get the same 422 colour space but up to 220mbs with the ninja 2, however, i found the signal to be more noisy than the internal C100 codec due to the fact the the HDMi signal is unprocessed. i haven't used a C300 but i'd imagine its 50mbs 422 also shows less noise.

I own a Ferrari and can tell you it won't hold a lot of groceries, which is the whole point of going to the grocery store. Making the Honda Civic the better choice.

When it comes to cameras, just like cars, it's a matter of choosing the right tool for the job at hand.

There is more noise but also more detail in my prores footage compared to my AVCHD footage.. It seems it's not applying any internal noise reduction which it applies on the AVCHD footage (this is when I was CP Locked) which allows me to use my much better noise reduction software in post.

Mind you, it's only a problem when you're pushing things. I had to do a night time landscape shot @ 20,000 ISO a couple of weeks ago and the difference was huge. My Prores shot looks amazing after careful grading and NR. The AVCHD shot not so much.

You know that you can program in noise reduction into the Custom Profile settings for when you need to shoot under a low light condition. Very easy to have a custom setting for all shots at 3200 and over.

The answer is yes, if the C300 is also using the Ninja. If the C300 is using the internal codec, the C100 should have a more gradable image.

The OP asked a simple question about the quality, not usability. Therefore the Ferrari comment seems a bit out there.

We use both. The C300 is usually easier in the field/hand. The look, especially now that Canon has allowed C300 the WDR option is equal with both going to the Ninja.

That's a cool way of mounting the Ninja. Thanks for responded to. Good to know that the C100 is basically a C300+ when you add the recorder. I'm more concerned about the AVCHD macroblocking when blown up to a big screen. Seems like the ProRes will smooth that issue out.

I would avoid AVCHD, particularly at 30p on the C100. At 30p it's laying down the progressive image interlaced and so macroblocking issues get REALLY weird when you have your NLE put the fields together again later. I think it must be better at 24p, as it's laying the image down progressively, but haven't tested much (all projects at 30p at the moment).

I have shot quite a bit at 24p using AVCHD and have very good results. Most of this material has gone to the web, but I have also had several jobs as second camera to a Red Epic for commercials and the material holds up very well on HD TV screens. I remember when everyone was using 5D II cameras as a second camera to the Red and everyone was thrilled with the look and ease of use. The C100 is way above the 5D cameras as far as DR, resolution, and ease of use.

As far as the "big screen"?, I doubt many are using a C100 for feature work but it is more than adequate for documentaries.

Good points all, and an observation here: Whenever we've had stuff shown in cinemas, it always looks better and for whatever reason the resolution seems much less important than on big desktop monitors, where every fault seems so apparent.
