Is NAB 2018 cancelled?

Well the "B" may be for Broadcast, but it seems to me that every year my broadcast work lessens and my web work increases. At an event the other night that was a multi camera stream, two broadcast producers were chatting up the company putting on the event to see if they could "piggy back" on the next one and use the content. Now this is, though mostly and American group and perhaps that is not the case in the USofA but colleagues in Europe and elsewhere are experiencing the same thing. So noNAB for me, the two cameras I am buying are already out, tested and proven but maybe there will be a price drop. Conventions might be fun but the good old days are just that. Cameras etc are released ahead and at this convention and that convention.
But to return to the theme of NAB, I would like a helium shoulder rig that makes the last four hours of the shoot as light as the first eight. Must just be gettin' old.

I still want a feature on all cameras that will say “oh, you think you’re recording right now? Cause you are totally not recording right now. Would you like to be recording? I’ll explain to you’re client how you’re a dumbass and smooth things over. I’m here for you brah.”

That or a 4 hour buffer recording.

Same thing for focus— a message that reads “Oh did you think you were focused on his eyes? No. You are focused on his tie. Want me to fix that for you, sweetness?”

Actually to hell with that. Something that hooks into your brain and reads your intention and focuses accordingly automatically.

I always thought that cameras should have a big green flashing X on the screen when the camera is paused (and the ability to turn this off) so there will be no chance of "shooting" while the camera is paused. Early in my career I was burned by "shooting" with a camera in pause mode while I was wearing 16 different-hats during the shoot. Ugh!

Hello I am Samuel and I have found myself having recorded in negative mode for half an hour before I realized this was the case. The camera would be recording while I prepared everything, then I would hit record and it would stop. Once the take was over I would hit again and the camera would actually start recording. And so on. For half an hour.

Luckily this has only happened to me twice in my life, and the other time I found out within minutes. But oh my, telling everybody what I had just done surely was no fun (luckily it was a very small thing we were shooting and I didn't waste lots of people's time apart from my own).

So, like an AC?

Most new cameras we would be interested in will probably be introduced at Cine Gear. NAB seems to have ceded to being just a big show but not the place where cameras are introduced. Too much "noise", it seems like they get better coverage at Cine Gear.

As the name implies, it's mostly aimed at broadcast. Film has always been a fairly small part of it.

Yeah, this turned out to be a bit redundant... didn't realize it was a few days old :)

Anyway... there IS usually some interesting technology on display there, like the Grass Valley server platform that allows a user to manage and route feeds from every camera in a stadium via a single console.

Indie filmmakers will probably never interact with that stuff other than at NAB since it's not really all that useful for us, but it's still an impressive bit of technology.

Sure. The flashing x on the pause mode is brilliant. So simple to implement (I’d think). Wish that were a reality. You could set it up so if you left the cam alone for a few minutes it would start and go away when you touched anything so you could still monitor your shot during setup.

What do y'all think of this variation? Let the counter be frame-accurate. So when you are recording, the frame number will be spinning away, providing a reassuring movement like the old mirror shutter, but just in the corner of the screen. Maybe it also turns green when going. When paused, that same counter blinks on and off every second. Maybe it also turns yellow when paused (I thought about red, for stop, but red has also been associated with "record," so it might trick your brain when you're in a rush).

I'm just trying to think of something that will catch your eye when it needs to, without driving you crazy when you're just trying to set up your shot. Having it disableable in the menu would solve the problem of it being annoying, but it introduces new problems (having to go in and out of a fiddly menu, forgetting to turn the warning back on when you need it, etc.).

Industrial design and user-interface design is hard.

Maybe Andrew Dice Clay can do the voice.

Well, not ALL of the Cine Servo lenses are without hard stops... ; )

*EDIT*
I don't know where my head was... Actually all(both) of the Cine Servo's have hard stops. The COMPACT Servo's are the one's that do not have hard stops.

Yep, forgot that crucial word.

I think if the camera gave you "pause" options, so you could choose something tiny and unnoticeable, or you could choose a large flashing green X, and some variation between these two. The main problem for me has always been the much too subtle green "PAUSE" text that you might not notice when things hit the fan on a high-pressure shoot, so having something that would be impossible to miss would be amazing to have when you need it.

How about they have a RED tally light come on in the VF and red tally lights on the body(usually in multiple places) and say REC somewhere in the VF when you're recording? Oh wait...

My F55 has a red tally light in the VF and on the operator side of the body and my VariCam(P2) has red tally in the VF, one on the front of the VF, one on the back of the VF, one on the back of the top handle and one on the back near the XLR connectors.

Man. I’ve really touched something off here, eh? All I can say is when youre rushing and thinking about 20 different things, buttons get pressed inadvertantly and you dont always remember to look for the little red light. Forest for the trees kinda thing.

God, I really wish they would make the Fujinon MK's in EF or PL mount. I'd actually prefer EF, but I heard Fuji probably won't do it because they are bitter rivals to Canon in ENG. So please, make it in PL mount and many people will buy it. Actually matching sized cinema zooms at 2 lbs? That's insane, but E-Mount? Such a waste.

What do you shoot on? So many people think it's all about EF mount, a bunch of dudes with EF glass on SONY camera's. It's like, what are they afraid of? There are more FS7's right now in use than there are people haha. I'm thinking of buying those MK's for my Sony camera, and I don't mind E-mount, in fact, it's great because it means I don't have to use a metabones or any other adapter. My thinking is if I were to upgrade my setup, my new camera would most likely be sony just looking at what's out there and if I were to swim in the arri zone my little puny lens investment would be a mere pittance anyway. So it's like, unless you're in PL land, just buy the mount you own and operate (not saying you own a sony btw)... just an interesting thing I've noticed people torment over what mount to invest in.

I'm still getting EF, even though I have Sony AR7-2 and getting an Sony AR7-3 as soon as it is in store (traded in my Canon 5D mk3 for sweet deal). I only have had real issues with Canon EF on Sony E when taking pictures (it reboots the camera into last used settings when pressing the trigger button) but in video-mode no real problems. The reason I'm staying with EF is because in my roadmap I'm seeing myself with BMD 4,6K or whatever they might release at NAB (or a new Cion, C100 etc...). I will probably never go back to Canon still cameras but I still feel that EF is the best "safe bet" for the level "under PL", besides a lot of glass hasn't been available earlier for Sony E-mount.

I would jump ship to E-mount if Sony released a camera that is better than FS7-2 and better than BMD's offerings and only costs around 9-12K. By "better" I mean, codecs and color science mostly, as the pixels I'm already fine with anything over 4K...

I think what people are asking for is something that gets their attention when they're not recording. When you're recording, the tally light is bright and red. When you're not recording, the tally light is: silent. I think to appreciate the danger you really have to be in a run-and-gun situation.

It's like a daily text message that tells you your bank account has enough money, when really what you need is a text message that tells you when you're overdrawn.

I think a watermark may also work. You can see through it to compose a shot, but still you can't miss it.

What do you mean you're tired of talking about this?

I think we can all appreciate the irony of this comment quoting me...

I guess this is kind of like how TV manufacturers started putting indicator lights on our TV's to tell us they were OFF, too.

But in all seriousness, I understand what the poster is saying, but I think the system that most manufacturers use is fine(tally and on-screen indicator), it just comes down to the operator paying attention. I'll be the first to raise my hand and say I've not punched when I thought I did or I've double-clutched. I did it way too many times a few weeks ago shooting with my 55. There were three factors involved, the trigger on my 17-120 is WAY stiffer than on my 2/3" lenses, so muscle memory let me down, I was shooting a lot of slow-mo, which can effect your start and stop, if they're too close together and the third and most important, I just wasn't paying close enough attention, at times, relying on the feedback of "I pushed the record button" instead of checking the tally. I don't need some overlay on my screen saying that the camera isn't recording, I just need to pay more attention.
