F55: Is my one week old F55 obsolete?

Thread title is meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek, but are the F55 and others already out of spec? First LG and now Samsung have announced 105 inch curved UHD sets with 5120x2160 native panels. What's up with that size (and aspect ratio)?

It reinforces my opinion that we're entering an era of product introductions based on innovation that doesn't wait for standards and protocols, an era where multitudes of formats coexist simultaneously.

Congrats on your F55.

Everything is practically obsolete the minute you buy it. Not much we can do about that except only buy what you need today.

Half of 5120 is 2560, which is a common LCD size now.

Making new panel from scratch is expensive. I imagine there were cost savings to be had by just expanding some already existing tooling and come up with a as-of-yet nonstandard size.

If they have the processing power to scale nicely, then it's a non-issue.

I think we all have quite a few years ahead before we have to start thinking of anything bigger than a 3840x2160 deliverable.

The aspect ratio is 2.37:1 - pretty much anamorphic widescreen - should be really cool. You just need to pop a 1.33 anamorphic lens on your F55 and unsqueaze in post to get to 5120.

Yes, it is obsolete.
Sell it to me, I will give you a good price.

$25? $50? $75 (It's all I have)

I already paid extra for the fabric protector and sealant package, and now this...

Mortgaged to the hilt already, got the Cine PL 6 pack too...

This kind of thing has been going on for many years. I saw a Sony once that was a 2.35 screen in SD! I think that was around 2000 probably. There have been many others. There wont be any delivery standard other than Bluray and UHD (whatever) disc for many years. Streaming will be 720 and 1080 for a long time as well and then netflix and others will SLOWLY start to try out UHD but with libraries that are 95% 1080. Also, a good 1080 camera will look great on that screen unless you are literally 3 feet from it.
