I've been given a budget of around 24K to upgrade equipment for a few upcoming TV programs. The money will come sometime between 2 weeks from now to as late as
Sept30th. (when it comes, it will be spent immediately for fear that they will take it away....)
I've been using a canon dslr and a pany 150 for most of my current stuff and this has worked well for me. (PSAs, Commercials, and a 3 time a week 30 minute cooking show)
They want me to do several 30 minute "head n shoulders" interview "news-y" hardball type shows, so I intitially thought just get 2 more 150s, more mics, batteries, tripods etc etc and a newtek tricaster to speed up the outflow. (These are usually "quick turn around" type things, so speed is somewhat important)
BUT.......(I started thinkin....) since I will probably not get a big chunk o cash like this for a while, SOOOO maybe I should try to "future proof" myself. see, I always do well controlled studio type stuff (mostly) so the 150 works great for what I do. (and i frequently do 2 and 3 camera gigs by myself) but I have always wanted to do more of the "artsy" work. (shorts, music vids, etc) and a little less of the "corporate, business" type stuff.
I've been interested in the AF100 for a while but hadn't really considered it because it's more of a Cini type cam than a news type cam. but lately I've been wondering if I could use it effectively in a studio type setting (2 of them and a 150 by myself) I know most probably have one cam and monitor it continuously anytime the red button is pushed, but I frequently am running from cam to cam to cam during shoots.
I am building a nice set of Canon and Nikon glass for my 60d (EF 17-55 2.8, EF 50mm 1.4, the cheapo nifty fifty 1.8, nikon 85 1.8, nikon 50 1.8, nikkor 28 2.8) So I assume these would all work well with the AF100 should birger ever come out with an adapter.
Am I nuts for even considering this cam for what I do. If the AC 160 or even the hvx 250 were available now, i might even consider them but I do love the ability to get some DOF when I want it.
