Is L-series waterproof?

Is it? In particular I'm looking at Canon EF 24-105/4,0 L IS USM. I'm planning to shoot in pouring rain with the 7D, and need to know 100% for sure that I have a lens that fully exposed is waterproof.

Fully exposed? Why on earth would you want to do that? There's no reason to do that and that will definitely kill the camera and the lens, either get one of these covers or get a good trashbag and wrap up your rig leaving you access to controls and the front element...but please don't leave your rig in the pouring rain uncovered.

Yeah, I'd like to do some really grim slider shots in mud and rain directly on the ground... basicly water and dirt plashing on the lens. Hmm... maybe I could wrap the entire camera in a plastic bag but then having plastic in front of the lens may not be best solution...

Anyway, since you can take a shower with the 7D I assumed there were lenses for the job aswell... well maybe not

I really don't even know what to say...take a shower with the 7D? Who treats their gear this way? You want that camera and lens housing wrapped - you can expose the front element but that's gonna be risky - use a hood to keep the front element from getting too wet.

i don't know if you're joking, or if it's something else, but did you check this?

A clear or UV protection filter on the front of your lens can go a long way too.

Note that the 24-105/4L's front element protrudes a long way; Tiffen and apparently Canon filters aren't 100% compatible with this lens. Apparently Nikon and B&W are.

There was an article on an 8 dollar ebay waterproof bag. I don't know how much I'd trust it underwater but it may do the trick for splashin crap on it.
