Is it worth while to use a recorder with the D7100?

I shoot mostly wildlife on a video head tripod, is the quality that much better with the decks? If so which one would you get? I don't have a cage yet, just use a loupe, external mic.

There are several tests on vimeo, youtube and various blog posts, you just have to search for them.

The consensus seems to be that the 7100 is only sending 420 via HDMI, so there's not much difference - you don't get a more robust image for grading. It looks like shadows/blacks clean up a little in some shots.

Overall, a deck gives you the convenience of shooting straight to prores and having longer shot times if you need that - I've yet to see a test where the results were "must-have". The D7100 is about the best DSLR image out there for now. But the H264 codec will break up under grading pressure. Just try to darken a weak sky... ouch!

Thank you Michael. After reading the luminous landscape evaluation, I thought I'd ask here. Guess I'll save my pennies until the 7300/9000 or whatever it is going to be called is released and if it has 4K that will be my choice, if not the Gh4 if new decks that handle 4k come out (looks like a mess send the Gh4 out to a recorder right now according to that forum here). I must say I do love the video (mostly a good/fair light shooter). Also I notice that my D7000 video is much better with the Nikonhacker software.

I'm extremely curious about the 7100 replacement. Nikon Rumors says July announcement?

I rented a 5300 for a music video and assigned it to the steadicam, and I was really pleased. Codec looked just like the 7100 to me, color space, compression, sharpness. If all we get is 1080-60, I'll still be the first in line.

Will Nikon do anything on the tails of the GH4? They really have had an odd approach to video (seeing how they started it all with the D90) compared to Canon. But then we got clean HDMI, so who knows.

4K, and 1080 HDMI at 10 bits would make my year. I'd like it if powering my monitor on or off didn't kick me out of live view. Everyone wants aperture control. I really want to stick with an APS-C sensor.

If Nikon could give us raw, I'd probably have a seizure.

I'd buy a BMCC or Pocket, but I really want 60p. And I don't want the smaller sensors of those or the Gh4. So for now, I'm renting. Come on Nikon, make me buy something!

It the light of the mirrorless assault, Nikon should do something. The new 810 is a lot more video friendly, and I think if Nikon wants to fire a shot that will cause as much talk as the Gh4, well 7 FPS on the still side with a say 10 shoot buffer but that clears very quickly with fast cards, and the features for the 810 except that 4K is added (perhaps 120/1080P also), mirrorless or not, say at $1500 or less I'm in. I currently have a 7000 (NikonHacker) and a 7100. I'd sell the 7000 and buy it after a month or two to see about any issues. My video lenses are a 12-24 (no aperture ring) and a 24-85 D, Macro, 80-200, 300 AFS all with aperture ring. I have Some m43 stuff - so the choice is either Gh4 or 7200 or 9300 (rumored D400).

What you should actually expect is a D7100s.

Bigger Buffer
Expeed 4
Faster AF and shooting speed
Tweeked same Sensor with much higher ISO
1080 P60 Video

No 4k at any frame rate, no 1080P or even 720P at 120fps
No continuous shooting (a simple firmware upgrade) and I do not understand why.

If you live near Monterey Bay, you can borrow my recorders.
The Shuttle gives you higher bit rate .
The Ninja is more flexable and has a built in monitor.
Neither will record 4k or 1080 P60 which why they are for sale.

Thank Roger appreciate the offer , but I live way north of you. I think unlike in the past when I lived on the bloody edge of the early adapters, I'm going to wait a year or so to see how the dust settles. I'm retired and just playing so I don't really have the need just the "want". I hope we get a new round of Zacuto Great Camera Shoot Outs over 4K.

Agreed - my gut feeling about Nikon & video is we'll get 1080-60 and that's it. Though we may see the aperture issue addressed, and perhaps a minor bitrate bump.

The continuous shooting (for video)? As far as I understand it, limiting clip time keeps the camera from being considered a "video" camera and lowers some sort of tarriff or tax rates.

There is no tariff anywhere but Europe that I know of.
So all they need to do is apply no limit (continuous 4GB files) to North America version for me to regain my NAS.
