is it safe to mount Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 on C300 without rods???

Question for anyone who has used the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM II lens with the Canon 300:

Is it safe to mount that heavy lens (3.28 lb / 1.49 kg) without rods to the C300?

Or is it too risky to put that much weight on the C300's lens mount?

Yes, I have been doing this since last february, solild, very steady. The C300 front end is much more rigid than a 5D...

The mount seems very strong and I use my 70-200 all the time without rods. One area to be more concerned about though is the tripod mount. With the 70-200 on the front the whole camera can flex forward on a tripod mount. I wish camera manufacturers would include a second tripod thread further back on the base to allow a more secure connection.

The lens is fine. It's designed so that it's not going to rip out of the EF mount. However when using the camera on a tripod with this lens I do attached it by the tripod ring as then the whole rig is better balanced.

That´s the reason why I use a RM-cage. It comes with its own tripod mount for the cam and fixes it additionally.

That is why I really like Sachtler quick slikde S-Plates on SB4, 6 and 8 video heads. You have 5" of instant back/front adjustment, very handy to re-balance a C300 when switching let's say between a 70-200 with extender to a 50mm prime.

The Redrock Micro cage looks great, the only reason I haven't invested in one yet is because I'm just not sure if the camera would retain it's great ergonomics for handheld use in the cage. The top handle looks to be more towards the back so it must make the camera more forward heavy. Would love to try one.

As far as the sliding tripod plate goes I don't think that actually helps with this problem as the issue is the camera flexing against the plate, which won't be effected by the position of the plate on the tripod.
