Is it possible to upgrade "old" p2 cards?

Hey guys,

I'm currently leering towards Panasonic's HPX170 to upgrade my video business to HD, and I just wondered something about P2 cards. Is it possible to open up "old" cards like 4Gb or 8Gb and upgrade the 4 SD cards inside to SDHC cards used in pro DSLRs?

Surely some people already thought of that, but I've searched a while on these forums and saw no threads or discussions about this.

Is it feasable at all? I suppose there's something inside the cards that might prevent something like this, so I'd really appreciate it if some of you tech-savvy DIY-ers would share its opinion on the matter (just to satisfy my curiosity, really!!) :)

Thanks,

Gabe

SDHC uses a different addressing system so even if it were possible physically, the systems are not interoperable across the 2GBx4 barrier (I believe this was also the reason for the firmware update). The only theoretical upgrade would be from 4GB to 8GB, but I've been told that the RAID controller in 4GB cards will not access 8GB.

In 16Gb+ cards, SDHC cards are not used in the manufacturing, although some Panasonic literature claims otherwise.

a few have tried, at least a few have said they would try, if you're going to try, then take pics at every step so if it doesnt work, maybe you can put it back the way it was.

Thanks for the answers guys! Jason, I don't think I'll try anything until after I see or read a tutorial from someone with real skills since I'm just a dabbler in electronics. I just wanted to know if it would be as easy to upgrade a P2 card as, say, a Firestore or a MBP with a bigger HDD (which doesn't seem to be the case!)

I've heard you can successfully change an 8gb P2 card into an 4gb card by swapping the SD cards. :)

If this were true, you could build your own array of SD cards and swap them out, using the P2 card as a "controller". I think someone tried this, too, but couldn't get it to work.
