GH4 Is it possible to take decent stills?

Why is focusing so difficult? It works like any other SLR. I went and check, and yes this is the second post I've seen in this forum with a very similar issue.

Sorry but nobody gave me a simple answer so I figured id ask again.

you just repeated why is focusing so difficult but then gave no settings as to how you shoot portraits.

It may not be a matter of settings. You may be subconsciously doing what a lot of people I observe do.

Focus, and without being aware of it they "rock back" a bit, or lean forward slightly then "snap". No matter how slight the movement it may be enough to shift the exact point of focus. It's a subconscious thing, and may take some special effort to "re-train".

Some folks will only do this with certain specific cameras if they are a little more "tense" over those certain camera's performance. So in your case you may be perfectly relaxed with cameras you are well used to but the GH4 being newer and more special may have you more "on edge". And that feeling may be enhanced by the "issues" you feel you are encountering with it.

So relax and pay special attention to what you do after you focus.

I have took about 30 000 photos with my GH4 and I have no issues about focusing. (Maybe some defocus at 300mm with very fast moving targets). Bigger issue for me is the noise. Noise is OK when I shoot at iso100. When using iso200 and higher it is always a compromise of sharpening/noise.

The gh4 doesnt have an iso 100, it starts at 200. Would love to see some of these photos, not many people post gh4 photos in this forum, just video. And what settings do you shoot with?

And thanks bruce, i am aware of this issue and i do wonder if something this is the problem, i just dont know the best way to get around it. Any tips?

And i am going to try your settings now mcboob!

GH4 has extended iso selection. 100, 125, 160, 25600 (but not in video?? why?)
I shoot RAW and because the lenses I use are not perfectly sharp I must add some sharpening and it brings noise. Lenses mostly Pana 14-140mm II and Pana 100-300mm. And did I mention that 14-140mm II jitters in video :)

I'm mcbob. Mcboob is my wife.

lol i guess i have a dirty mind and just read it that way :x

I tried your settings and im just snapping photos in my house and i like the look. What focus mode do you use? just the 1-area or the face/eye detection? and what settings for portraits? i normally shoot natural or portrait mode and dont mess with tthe settings.

For focus, I usually drift between AFS/AFF and MANUAL

For snapshots like that, I just stick to the face/eye detection. Picture profile is usually a slightly modified CineV, Natural, or Scenery, but that's really all personal preference
