Is it harmful to switch WRITE PROTECT to OFF while P2 card is IN my PCMCIA slot?

Or in the camera for that matter?

I just wonder because as we all know, it's important to WRITE PROTECT the P2 card as soon as it leaves the camera, but if I want to FORMAT it after I dump some footage, do I need to eject it, switch it off, then plug it back in to format?

I know you can format IN CAMERA, but I don't want my Camera Operator to have to worry about that.
 
I don't think it'll damage anything to switch it while it's in the computer, but if anything, the computer just might not recognize that the switch has moved until you eject and re-insert the card.

(but this is a guess, as I haven't tried it).
