is HDSLR better than HVX200?

I keep getting this feeling im missing out and should switch over from my hvx to a dslr, but when I watch side by sides on different models I see the hvx as a superior image quality.

Aside from depth of field which I accomplish with my redrock and sensor size I really cant decide to make the switch.

Maybe I should just save up and get a DSLR as a back up?

I invested in all this stuff a couple years ago but never really got to do any film work because of my contract with WB. I'm now gearing up again and I feel left behind.

Opinions?

Hey Robert, good to see you back.

My question is, why are you interested in getting gear again? If you invested in lots of gear a few years ago but never did much with it, why risk doing that again? My recommendation would be to come up with lots of projects and things to shoot, THEN figure out what gear would be best.

Your all right. DSLR is cool right now, but my initial investment is still not paid for by work yet. From a business perspective it is best to hold off.

Shoot with what you have (which is a great kit that should provide awesome images) If you keep chasing technology to get the latest and greatest(or trendiest) you will never get anything accomplished.

liberty hill, TX. i drive through there all the time. howdy neighbor.

i started using my canon 500d as a back up to my hvx200 and it's been a lot of fun so far. i don't always need great dof, but when I do, it works like a charm. though my particular model only shoots HD video at 30fps, which is good enough for me right now.

if you see that your hvx has a better picture why would you switch? i personally do not like dslr's i dont really like the image they produce but thats me. if you want one definatly use it as a back up or different angles.

all the dslr is going to get for you is easier depth of field. and conversationally better low light performance. but it comes with a crop of negative points too.

you can get more or less the same DOF end result (arguably BETTER) with your redrock rig.

i sold my complete brevis+nikon rig with the intent of getting a 5D and i regret the decision.

All excellent points. Ill hold on to my hvx, and maybe pick up a dslr as a second cam.

Really what was driving to this was the weight and size of the rig.

yeah. me too. my whole agenda was that for quick grab and go shots, there are more points of possible failure and much more setup/breakdown time with a 35mm adapter (letus/brevis/redrock/sg) rig
