is dvx100a too soft ?

Hello,

First post here, I'm a film director and I worked with betacam SP, digital, 35mm, DVcam and miniDV.
I'm interested in a small camera and I did some jobs using a Sony PD-170. I found it very nice in many situations where we couldn't use light or using a minimum light setup. Also very nice with a good photography.
I liked the colors and general quality but I dislike the sharpness, all images looked too soft, like no enough definition.
I didn't tried the DVX100a, but I liked the features and design. Could you tell me if the definition is better than the PD-170 or worst ?

Thanks for any input,
Ulisses Simionato

About the same. But the DVX has several image sharpness settings you can adjust that may give you waht you're looking for -- between detail level, detail coring, v_detail_level, and v_detail_freq you have a lot of sharpness control.

Thanks Barry,

Even before buying the DVX, I'm impressed with the features !

Great !

A question, all the 16x9 films I watch here are using the anarmophic lens ?

Thanks,
Ulisses

one thing to note ulisses is that Disjecta's Brackendale footage is cropped to nearly 50% of the cameras actual res! So if you like the sharpness he got you will love the DVX in general :)

Disjectas work was cropped to 2.35:1 ratio. Some people here have used the anamorphic lens but I'd say the majority use either squeeze or letterbox mode.

Re: is dvx100a too soft ?

Has DVX a builtin letterbox mask for 16:9 or something to help in adjust the frame ?

Thanks,
Ulisses
