Is an external recorder even worth it?

I don't really think those are heavy grades really and if that's what you want with AVC you'll be fine. If, however you wanted to change the womens dress colour as she was running, then you'd be wanting the least noise, compression blocks etc,. to maintain a consistantly keyable area.

Dermot's examples are perfect. Especially the face colour alteration at the end. That's what i'm talking about. +1 there...

cheers
Paul

...again, when it comes to grading, no argument from me. When it comes to improvements in resolution of hi motion shots( due to compression artifacting, i.e. blocking), no diff.

You may find our upcoming event of interest. If you can't make it to our LA office then you can watch it live over the internet.

Sometimes the camera you want to shoot with does not record in the format you wish to capture. You might need a higher recording standard for your deliverable, or a recording directly compatible with your editing system. You may need a simpler format for quicker post or offline editing, or perhaps your camera can output a high quality RAW file but requires a separate recorder to capture. There are now a variety of camera-mounted recorders available which allow the user to decide separately which camera, which recording format, and which post path is most appropriate for a given production.

AbelCine EXPO: Camera-Mounted Recorders is scheduled for 6pm-9pm, July 23rd in our Los Angeles facility. Manufacturers participating in the EXPO include AJA (featuring the KiPro Quad), Atomos (featuring the new Samurai Blade), Convergent Design (featuring the new Odyssey 7 & 7Q), Sound Devices (featuring the recently-updated PIX240i) and SanDisk (offering special sales on select media). Presentations, a technical seminar, hands-on time and a Q&A session will be part of the day’s activities.

This event will be STREAMED LIVE on Livestream.com.
