Is 720p30 (mjpeg) a good choice?

Its just a first short glance but it seems that 720p30 could sometimes be an alternative to 720p50. It´s a tiny bit sharper than 720p50 and has a tad better resolution and dynamic range to my eyes.. But make your own verdict and tell me what you think about it...

Datarate (mjpeg) is between 14-31mbps

I was first apprehensive of how gh2 implements its mjpeg 30p but after seeing this tests, for practical purposes where 30 is necessary I see its very well implemented and is usable.
I am eyeing this camera very closely now.

Thank you for doing this test Uwe.

Were looking at your footage again right now with my brother whose also a Dop and has some experience with Nikon's mjpeg implementation, were both in agreement that we can use both avchd and mjpeg, the codec is not an 'absolute' issue and so we can just focus on the aesthetic need to use which particular framerate.

Second test - now 1080p24 (AVCHD) vs 720p30 (MJPEG). To me the result is a bit surprising. But, as always, make your own verdict. The stuttering playback of the 1080p24 footage is due to the fact that I´ve edited it in a 720p30 timeline...

How is the Mjpeg in GH2 compared to GH1?
While it doesn't appear that Panasonic has made any changes to the GH1's MJPEG codec in the GH2, you'll be able to use Extended Optical Zoom with MJPEG on the GH2. The unhacked MJPEG codec is set to produce bitrates up to 17Mbps, and tends to maintain higher bitrates in low-light than the AVCHD codec.

With a hacked GH13, however, MJPEG bitrates can be reliably boosted up to 35Mbps while still retaining in-camera review of video footage. If you're willing to forego in-camera playback, bitrates up to 65Mbps are available. This is the patch I'd recommend for low-light situations. For details, check out the link in my signature.

........

I don´t know anything about the quality of the gh1 mjpeg but I´ve shot quite a lot mjpeg´s with the gh2. And the bitrate varies from 10mbps to around 32mbps (in daylight) depending on the amount of details in the scene...
