Is 16:9 mode really 16:9?

I'm shooting in 16:9 mode on my DVX100. When I measure the image, sans bars, it seems more like 16:10 or 16:11? Perhaps this mode just approximates 16:9? Looking at a show like Rocketboom I just don't get the space they do either side of the presenter when I'm framed in a similar manner, in the middle of the screen and a similar distance away from the camera?

Letterbox mode on the DVX is in deed not 16:9.
Squeeze is.

But you are best off shooting 4:3 and letterboxing in post.
