More like those who have been there and done it, and those who haven't yet.
But, of course, that's really the same thing, isn't it?![]()
Indeed. I have been there, done that at the $10K level and found "success" (marginal that it is) but it's even harder now that it was for me then.
Also, the original intention of the original post was to create a film as a writing showcase...which I really don't know that will be very effective unless it's basically a David Mamet-esque type work that can be given a decent shot at that budget level assuming LOTS of luck and circumstances playing into your favor.
I mean, GlenGary GlenRoss is something I could do on a 10K budget...but I won't have the genius performances of Alan Arkin, Alec Baldwin, Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Jack Lemon and Kevin Spacy at my disposal....but if I had a similar literary script that I felt could be conveyed effectively at the 10K level. Then I'd go for it.
However, an unknown GlenGary GlenRoss would have a difficult time finding distribution if the name Mamet wasn't attached to it. Believe me, I've had experience trying to sell similar work with unknown casts. And any other movie genes would be very difficult to pull off for 10K and invariably the lower production value will translate to jabs at the content as well. So that was my main caution to the original poster since he stated that as an objective.
I'm still very optimistic...why else would I be spending ever hour of spare time I have after my regular job (which I'm decent at) making movies in some way?
However, it's very important to understand the real odds of success as well as the realistic expectation of what your final product will be.
Many folks mentioned Robert Rodriguez and he's an inspiration to me as well. It certainly took a lot of luck for him to ever come to light like he did (talk about an improbable rise) but I like to imagine that if he never got an agent he'd still be making movies just like I am. I'd suggest folks here check out a film called "The Other Side" by Gregg Bishop. It reminds me of Rodriguez' success (in a positive way) in that he pulled off some amazing action scenes and sequences with a very limited budget (not 10K but not much) . He went on to do another successful film called Dance of the Dead which found release and was a bigger budget but still sub .5 Mil. He's a GA guy and a nice guy at that, so I definitely root for him to continue his streak (did this article way back in my online mag).
Thought I'd mention him as so many discussed RR and I feel Gregg's track is similar if not as meteoric in his ascension but he knew exatly how he could achieve these results going in. It's no small task to make a credible movie on such a low budget...I think that's all some of us are saying. It seems some folks are happy to say...Yeah, you can make a movie for 10K and leave it at that. Fine. But we'd like to qualify that it's not that simple.
I think the discussion has been very good, I wish Randall would chime in again since he started this whole thread
Let me plug my trailer again (www.battle-movie.com) just because
