IQ - older Manual Nikon VS. modern Canon EF (non-L)

Since with 7D video I do everything manual, some old Nikon lenses seems really appealing because of the price and manual focusing on the older lenses seem nicer..

I know with the modern Canon's you get a lot of technological conveniences, but when it comes down to just Old-Fashioned image quality: sharpness, color, bokeh, etc... How do the old Nikon manual lenses compare to the modern Canon EF (Non-L series because I can't afford them)?

The older nikons don't have the new coatings that the latest lenses will have, so there might be issues with flaring and such, but plenty of people, including me, have gotten great results from 20+ year old nikkons that are still great glass.

When I got a Canon 50mm EF and tested it against my Nikkor 50mm, it was hard to tell a significant difference, except that the canon was sharper wide open.

I'm also curious about using Nikon lenses instead of Canon. What advantages or disadvantages does anyone feel strongly about in terms of having a physical iris ring on the Nikon lenses themselves?
