iPhone 3Gs - Announced today

I predict that within 3-5 years, there will be no more Mac Pros. I predict that the next version of FCS will be the last. Apple is becoming a purely consumer electronics company.

It is very shortsighted to put all of their development eggs in one basket (mobile phones). Sure, they have great market penetration in the cell phone market but the cellular market is very fickle and the Koreans or Nokia or someone could usurp the iPhone overnight.

The signs are all pointing toward this...

1. Development on all Apple pro apps has been languishing for the past few years. FCS is so ancient, it is growing mold around the edges.

2. On laptops, take away FW400. Take away FW800. Begrudgingly give FW800 back.

3. Take away PCMCIA (P2)

4. Take away Expresscard 34 (P2 w Duel and SxS)

The writing is on the wall. As an Apple user and fan, I am feeling a little disoriented. What will FCS/Apple users do when this comes to pass? Sure Apple could sell off the pro apps, but without the corresponding hardware to run the apps on, they become ports to PC platform. Ported apps are usually not very good.

If you were an editor who had been on Mac and FCP since beta, which PC editing application would you consider learning? I am thinking I would head back to Avid on the PC? Vegas looks cool but it's not a pro app, definitely standardized in the industry. Edius has some cool features but once again, not a pro app. The only choices seem to be Avid or Premier. Yuck. I really love FCS but it is getting stale and creaky.

Dan

I certainly hope you are wrong Dan. Where is FCS 3? Wait to make a judgement until then. Bust seriously, where is it? Isn't it due to come out soon? Or already? I can't wait much longer.

Love the diversity in this thread! Haha, I'll definitely report back after I get my hands on this 3Gs, which will be my first iPhone model. (YAY!)

I thought the 3G was already out..

EDIT- ok I get it.

They make all these new features, yet they don't do SQUAT about the battery.

I really want an iphone, but it's 3-4 hours of battery life doesn't do it for me. (I'm on the net a lot, and I couldn't imagine GPS running for a couple hours trying to get me somewhere)

I can't remember the 3G battery specs (and am too lazy to google it) but I'm sure I get nowhere in the vacinity of some of the claims and yes, I've fully discharged and charged my battery many times.

The only thing I don't like about my 3G is the battery life and it's 2MP camera.

BTW if you want turn by turn nav there's a program called Xgps that does that.

FCS 3 won't drop until Snow Leopard does, which means late this year or NAB 2010.

Meanwhile, they will introduce four new models of iPhone and 50,000 more apps, whoopee! That helps us out as editors a whole lot.

That's a different matter. That article is talking about upgrading at the new contract price when your previous contract has not yet expired (2 years). In that case you can upgrade, but have to pay the full phone price.

However, in Brandon's case, because it has been less than 30 days since he purchased his phone, he should be eligible to return it (for a small restocking fee) in exchange for a different phone. I should have said "exchange" in my original post, rather than "upgrade". This 30 day thing is standard for AT&T and should apply even in the case of a recent 3G purchase exchanging for a 3Gs

I bought a 3G last night :). 99.99 dollars is cheap and its a huge upgrade over my last phone. For the most part the new features of the 3GS weren't that important to me since 3G users can still get the new software update.

Sure, but the main thing to keep in mind about the 3GS is the hardware update, not what is coming in OS 3.0, because like you said, everyone is getting that.

3GS is now sporting a much more powerful processor, (600mhz as opposed to the 3G's 412mhz) twice the amount of RAM, OpenGL 2.1, a better graphics chip, (which is said to rival dedicated handheld gaming devices) 3MP camera, an actual compass (yay...) tied into navigation ie. GPS and google maps, voice recognition, and a few other things as well.

Go go Brinkhaus. The hardware is exactly why I'll be shellin' out for another iPhone (four to date) on the 19th. I also expect the onboard gpu to perform better in the long-run, as the 3G seems to have slowed over time. Bah!
