iPhone 3Gs - Announced today

For me personally, the timing couldn't have been better. As I was contemplating the purchase of a 3G iPhone, I came across this news today from Apple's WWDC keynote. The new phone will be cheaper than the current 3G price (before price drop) though they will continue to sell the 3G at a discounted price of $99.

Some cool new features, and with the ability to replace my current iPod Touch, add a true turn-by-turn GPS and mobile browser/email it's hard not to seriously consider...Especially when you can grab a 32GB for $299, and a 16GB for $199. Will be available (with OS 3 already installed) on June 19th.

B-Man ... you should be able to upgrade for a small restocking fee if it's within 30 days. Might check with the store where you got it.

That new iPhone has some major sex appeal but I'm a SPRINT guy. So, I actually picked up this Saturday morning.

The synergy, multitasking and contact syncing is pretty awesome. I hope they give Apple a run for their money. It would benefit all of us. Competition is good.

I predict that within 3-5 years, there will be no more Mac Pros. I predict that the next version of FCS will be the last. Apple is becoming a purely consumer electronics company.

It is very shortsighted to put all of their development eggs in one basket (mobile phones). Sure, they have great market penetration in the cell phone market but the cellular market is very fickle and the Koreans or Nokia or someone could usurp the iPhone overnight.

The signs are all pointing toward this...

1. Development on all Apple pro apps has been languishing for the past few years. FCS is so ancient, it is growing mold around the edges.

2. On laptops, take away FW400. Take away FW800. Begrudgingly give FW800 back.

3. Take away PCMCIA (P2)

4. Take away Expresscard 34 (P2 w Duel and SxS)

The writing is on the wall. As an Apple user and fan, I am feeling a little disoriented. What will FCS/Apple users do when this comes to pass? Sure Apple could sell off the pro apps, but without the corresponding hardware to run the apps on, they become ports to PC platform. Ported apps are usually not very good.

If you were an editor who had been on Mac and FCP since beta, which PC editing application would you consider learning? I am thinking I would head back to Avid on the PC? Vegas looks cool but it's not a pro app, definitely standardized in the industry. Edius has some cool features but once again, not a pro app. The only choices seem to be Avid or Premier. Yuck. I really love FCS but it is getting stale and creaky.

Just put some NES, Genesis, SNES roms on my iphone 3G last night - this thing rocks.

im stil waiting for the 64 gig version.... and verizon useability....

Why have an Iphone if i need to carry my ipod around too.....

For those of you who already use an iPhone, how much is your monthly cell bill from Satan incarnate, AT&T?

They did a poll on the LA Producer Group list that I am on and the average with that crowd (working producers, location scouts, ADs, etc.) and the average was $245.00 per month. Now if you have clients paying for that, no problem, but for those of you who pay your own cell bills, how much per month are you shelling out?

What makes Premiere more of a professional NLE than Vegas? The new Vegas supports Red footage and most people agree that it is easier to use than Premiere. I'm not disagreeing, as I haven't used Premiere since CS2, so I don't know much about it anymore.

There's an app called Simplify Media (and many like it) that allow you to stream your music off of your computer onto your phone. I have about 50 gigs of audio files on my PC that I can stream to my phone without any buffer time in good listening quality, and it only needs 1 bar of edge to work well.

My monthly bill is $90/month for 500 any-time minutes plus 5000 weekend or something like that (and rollover) and includes unlimited texts and data transfer. My dad gets a discount from his work for AT&T so I end up paying something like $65 a month. I don't know how the average could be $245.00/month.

Premiere Pro CS4.1. It can import FCP projects, it's a "suite" like FCS (but includes PhotoShop and After Effects), and it can do things like graphics card acceleration for native realtime AVCHD and AVC-Intra, it offers native P2 support, OnLocation (with, hopefully, some HDMI support someday)... and on a Windows box you can get a PCMCIA slot and an expresscard slot and a blu-ray drive. CS4 was a rough launch, 4.1 looks better; Adobe has a serious opportunity here if they can just get their act together.

Yeah, $245??? Maybe if someone always exceeded the minutes and/or texts of their plan and were paying a premium ala carte price for overages...

Can OnLocation be purchased as a standalone? That always seemed like the perfection software substitution to expensive hardware, but I've never found a way to get it without Premiere Pro (and I already use Vegas).

If FCP goes away I'll just go back to Avid. Or learn PPro. Learning new stuff is inevitable so I'm not really worried about that. I mean, it's not like I expected to be editing on FCP 30 years from now. Also, if Apple sells off the ProApps why would a developer make them PC only? I don't see Apple discontinuing it's hardware line anytime soon. The price of the ProApps though would go up if they were sold by a third party because there wouldn't be hardware sales anymore to subsidize the software.

Anyway, more on topic. I'm on the fence between an iPhone and a Pre. Both phones have things I want, but I'm probably going to wait a month or so I can get real world feedback about the two phones.

This is my next phone. I'm glad I skipped the 3g (didn't felt like much of an upgrade from my 2g).

Dan, wait for FCS3, than make your judgment. We're still on the first half of the game. The Mac vs PC adds are based on the Cool factor. If they loose the creative industry support, you can be sure that branding will fall of the hook. Its the creative industry that gives Mac the "glamour" they have.

You know who could really benefit from this? DELL- If they were smart, they would make a deal with Adobe and create machines specially optimized for Video and Audio professionals, just for branding.
