iPhone 11 Pro

This is not correct. You can simultaneously record from two lenses at once and get two separate shots when you’re done recording.

Before we get all giddy about the Filmic Pro update and the "Multicam" feature I would point out we can already do this. The Apple camera app even on my iPhone X has the ability to swap between the 1x and 2x cameras while recording video. The updated Apple camera app on the iPhone Pro will have a switch to swap between all three.

The filmic app is not so much Multicam editing as it is a hard stop instant jump alternative to a zoom lens. Filmic Pro is just adding a preview of the different cameras vs the Apple app that has a button to swap between the cameras. Since the camera angle is the same and only a 2x zoom it isn't exactly a mystery what each camera will see and the live preview of each camera is kind of pointless.

Cool use of the technology but really not impressive at all. At least not as impressive as Apple made it out to be. Its a GUI alternative to the Apple camera app and nothing more. Even adding the front camera into the mix is not a big deal at all and some apps already allow us to do this like FaceTime.

Whats impressive is a phone can have an alternative to a 4x zoom lens. 13mm, 26mm and 52mm on a phone is pretty cool but it is no match to a good camera with a good zoom lens. Not to mention I find the 13mm on the iPhone Pro to be a bit too wide and distorted. So I'm really back to the 2 cameras on the iPhone X models. The iPhone 11 removed the telephoto camera in favor of the 13mm ultra wide which means the only way to get the useful telephoto camera is get an older X model phone or the new Pro. Apple seems to be forcing users into the pro model if they still want that telephoto camera.

I don't think Filmic Pro allows recording of each camera. By the look of the app it is clearly acting like a video switcher where you see four camera angles but you have to select the active angle. That likely means it just records a single video and feeds it whatever the active angle is. Exactly like the Apple camera app already does.

I'm with you. iPhone SE is the phone I currently have and use, 4S before that. Whenever I'm hanging out with friends, they've always got their phones out on the table or wherever because it's too big to comfortably keep in their pockets when sitting down, while mine stays comfortably in my pocket. .

Same reason I still use an SE. It just fits perfectly in my pocket.

Steve was famously adamant on that being the optimal size (3.5-4”) because it could be comfortably held and operated in one hand. It wasn’t until after he passed they went larger.

All for additional models but I really wish they would continue to launch a 4” version on equal footing each refresh cycle. I also know multiple people in my immediate circle who prefer that size.

I had a 5s for almost exactly 5 years (almost to the day in August). I refused to upgrade because the phone was PERFECT in every way including its fit inside a pocket.

With that said...eventually I did upgrade and I've had an 8 Plus for a year and I've already forgotten what the other one was like. I like the bigger screen much more. Still love the 5s too though.

Yes two recorded videos if you want but I still question just how useful that is when all the cameras are from the same exact position and shooting the exact same subject with just different focal lengths. The only advantage is being able to multicam edit in post later instead of making those decisions on the fly. Still a rather boring way to shoot a multicam setup. Its kind of like those that shoot 4k so they can pan and scan for HD delivery and have a wide shot and slightly more closeup shot. I'm not saying it will not be used for some good results but it really limits the creativity of a multicam shoot and really just becomes an alternative to zooming in post while keeping 4k quality. So that part is cool and it opens up the ability for those with only one camera to at least have a pseudo way to cut to different angles. I still think having two phones on such a production would be a better solution. That way at least two angles could be very different and each would have two recorded videos to choose from for four angles in post to work with.

I think it is cool what phones are adding but it is also important for people to understand what the limitations of such tools are. Apple markets their stuff as the last tool you will ever need and unfortunately a lot of reviewers fall into this hype. Its good to bring a little reality back into the discussion.

Not videos, LENSES. One in front and three in the back of the iPhone.

What is your point. It is not recording all four of those cameras. The device/app can only handle recording two of those.

The app can view all four cameras at the same time, record two of those if you desire or switch between the four cameras for a master recording . The master recording and a secondary recording so you could switch between the three front cameras for a pseudo Multicam edit recording master while also recording the rear camera for reaction shots from the director sort of thing.

All of this is moot for me, I would never use mutliple lenses or camera views at the same time, it's all about the built in EIS for me. The other morning, I tried shooting some very carefully handheld 4K on my iPhone 8 Plus on a trail hike, walking through some flowers and weeds up a trail and it looked unusable even though the image was surprisingly good. The microjitter just made it unusable and I didn't feel like dragging a gimbal 10 miles up a steep trail. Hope they can get these to shooting a 6K image for 4K recording and implement some serious internal IS that works. That will be a game changer. If I could get this image quality with a gimbal-like EIS without degrading the image, the iPhone would become a lot more usable for me on projects. As it is now, if I have to bring and lug around a gimbal, I'd rather just shoot with the XT-3 and it's gimbal. Getting smooth movement without a gimbal would be so handy.

It's not this phone that is so interesting y'all. It's what it points to.

Computational photography and videography... things are going to get wild.

Here's a few interesting things we've seen just in the last few DAYS:

- Sony includes gyro metadata for superior post stabilization right inside new camera
- iPhone records two videos from two separate lenses automatically
- Apple Deep Fusion does some trickery via machine learning and multiple exposures to deeply enhance regular photos

Add to that everything else we've seen more recently - faked bokeh with adjustable DOF, night mode producing insane lowlight still shots from tiny sensors and lenses, AI object detection which is increasingly becoming a "live" feature, robust on device editing...

And things just on the horizon already announced or implied - sensor level electronic vnd (via pixel dimming), 3D depth perception and calculation, lots more

And existing tech that becomes miniaturized and more efficient - 32-bit float point audio recording as standard, super quick and easy to process as computers and storage advances; internal RAW in formats increasingly easy to work with; total conversion LUTs and tools like Cinematch, deep fakes and morph cuts, etc.

Everything we know is about to change. It already is. The next 15 years will make the last 15 look stagnant.

I can only imagine how good cinema cameras could be if they had A13 class chips running them.

Glad to see it!

The iPhone X series camera felt like beta testing on the customer. The video features and camera were a little funked up. The 11 looks better.

I have the X and 11Pro. I never felt like the X was anything but a solid, finished product with a very good camera* for when it was made, including up to last Friday before I got my 11Pro, Lol ; ) . The 11Pro is better in pretty much every regard(i.e: stills, video, battery life, speed, even the screen-and the X has an excellent screen), but the X is still fine. Now, iOS 13 that shipped on the new phones, THAT was beta testing. And they knew it was buggy and flakey before it released. That's why we received 13.1 on Tuesday instead of next week.

My first X phone had the overheating issue and short battery. The second one had weird highlights.

Getting two bad models of anything feels wrong.

Maybe the camera on my second one was faulty. Maybe that is just how it shoots. I’ll take it in again.

Loving my 11 pro. First iPhone I ever got on launch day. My fiance has had to wait 2 weeks for his lol.

Which one did they go for? I pre-ordered mine, but my GF didn't decide until the afternoon of launch day that she wanted one. We walked into Best Buy about 6pm and walked out with a 512GB Space Gray for her about 10 minutes later. It's definitely not like it used to be, with people standing in line for days for them.

That would definitely sour you to it. The X has been the only one that I didn't pre-order. I actually waited until December before I bought mine. Maybe they had sorted out some of the issues by then. I do know that the camera on my X totally smoked the camera on my friends 7 Plus, especially the way it handled flair compared to his. I forgot, I did have intermittent GPS issues with mine.

Does the 11Pro have any kind of usable image stabilization built in for video shooting? If so, how good is it? If not, that makes it close to useless for video shooting for me.
