what would be the benefits of getting it when you could get a dedicated HD field monitor for the same price?

On a set convenience of getting rid of cables worth every penny.
A second and more important benefit is HD transmission for live boradcasting. 1080 HD transmitters usally starts around 5K. (This one is nothing to do with Ipad of course)

But for the on-camera monitoring purposes that some are looking for from an iPad, this Cube thingy is ridiculous.

Ya know...the iPad isn't the only tablet out there! Perhaps one of the Toshiba or Droid tablets will allow at least an HDMI in? Could be neat if it recorded an H.264 proxy, too?

Yes, if you are purely looking from a camera operator's pov who's simply looking for a field monitor. There is cheaper, proper field monitors built for the job.
I was simply looking at Cube's value as a transmitter, whether it used with an ipad or not.

Nope. It's still (like every single HDMI port I've ever seen on a computer that didn't have a dedicated capture card) a HDMI output only.

HDMI is a one-way connector (except for a little control data on the side); and there is no (mass market) reason to have a HDMI *input* on any computer.
