Man, I stepped through those two shots of the alien like 10 times.

Looks AWESOME.

F-in cool. I've wanted to do that to a grey for a long time, but they always get you in the mind-hold before you can even pick up the stick to whack 'em with.

That was pretty incredible. I'm looking forward to the Sci-Fi Fest, too bad you weren't able to make it. You had some impressive footage there.

I'll second bc5431's comment. Visually, it was FLAT OUT STUNNING! Amazing work, great camera work, LIGHTING, etc. Some serious visual eye candy, and absolutely loved it ... great attention to detail too with the reflection of the guy whacking the alien in the alien's eye. The only thing I could critique on THAT part, was that for continuities sake, the guy was already IN to the swing in that reflection, yet when we see him he's go the stick clear over his shoulder, just starting the swing. But really, no one's going to step frame through it like we did ... during the actual film, it'll just look perfect, I'm sure.

For a trailer, I'd like to see story elements. This had some great taglines & moments, but was mostly just a lot of killer visual eye candy.

I'm afraid I'm gonna be the one to throw in some negativity...

First, let me say, visually everything is great. Lighting, vfx, all top notch.
Nothing to improve there, really. Good job.

But then I've got two concerns with the trailer:

1. A major one.
One of the leads, the dude with the whiskers, wearing glasses, should have never been allowed to be on camera, at least in a Sci-Fi movie. He totally looks like someone you would see in those nerdish Star Wars fan flicks. Maybe that's just me, but each of his scenes screamed "Cheesy!"... and then he took a gun...

2. Not so important, since it's not really about the movie itself.
The way the trailer was cut. It looked like a bunch of shots randomly thrown together. Normally (unless it's just a 30 second teaser that doesn't show anything) whole trailer is a build up to a short extremely-fast-cut action sequnce followed by some sort of climax, be that a punchline or a cliffhanger ending or just an explosion revealing the movie's title/release date. Now let's look at this one:
First fourty seconds are fine. Camera is flying up to our planet, where two guys are sitting in a car when suddenly something unnatural appears. They come out of the car to see what's going on and apparently something scares them making them run. So there they are running through the yard looking for a place to hide. We see each of them looking out from their hideouts and... that's where funny things start happening (shot by shot)
They are back in the car // The whiskers guy inside a house looking for a light switch? // Him again hiding in the shadows outside // Both of them staring at the UFO, the guy on the right is about to point a gun at it // The whiskers guy with an idiotic grin on his face firing light rays with a lightsaber-looking thing he was holding in the previous shot // Both of them hiding behind a car // The blonde guy hitting something/someone with a stick // Cars driving on the freeway // The whiskers guy drawing out a gun // Him running with the same gun in his hand // Both guys hiding behind a car, again, just like 4 shots ago // UFO firing laser // The blonde guy being knocked down // Both guys in an awkwardly framed shot in the yard under the UFO again. The blonde one is pointing the gun at the UFO // Blonde guy shooting
Gas barrel exploding, alien being beaten down with a stick. Nothing wrong with the last 4 shots.

That IMO is just plain lazy editing. As if someone was hurrying to finish the trailer and after coming up with the beginning and the end parts just dropped every other shot onto the timeline in between.

Sorry... still, I'll be waiting for the final product. Good luck.

I'm guessing, xl70e3, that you didn't see the earlier post by Pixelmagic. He couldn't get his submission complete for SciFest and so cut together a trailer as quickly as he could which would explain the flaws you noticed.

Pm. Keep at it. I'm looking forward to a completed edit and I know I'm not alone.

sincerely,

ian

Dude, all critique aside. I watched the trailer again, and yeah, the acting is a bit weak, but who cares!!! It's a really great trailer, and I think it'll turn out to be a very entertaining short! Really enthused to see the rest!!! Good luck!

Yeah, I agree with the briceman. Awesome effects and an all in all entertaining trailer. I'm sure the final edit will turn out great. Keep up the great work!

How long did it take you to create the alien?

The alien was not made by me. He was modeled by a visual effects artist at Frantic Films. He was kind enough to allow me to use it in my film.

I did however paint and texture the alien's skin.

Painting, lighting, texturing, etc. is what makes the difference between a horrid looking CGI and and great looking CGI. Did you do the animation of the model?
