GH2 INTRA GOP1 176M Hack = superb

i cant remember the exact procedure, but i remember a discussion on personalviews about a cooler white balancing to get rid of the red noise.

this is what drives me crazy about the Gh2. if only there was a way to get rid of this crap then I'd be more than happy. already pretty satisfied about the camera and V's hack, but damn this codec to hell.

Yeah.
Those Jaggies are horrific.
I would absolutely go to lower overall resolution if I could get rid of those.

Ok question here to Sage. How did you achieve such a fantastic image quality (like on your caps)?! Right now, I'm on the 44 mb hack, what exactly do I need to do to have something that approaches this quality?!

First I imagine that I have to download the 176 mbps hack, but then?! I dont understand a single thing about those GOPs you're talking about.

Ok, I'm a noob here, I cant find the hack anywhere, where can I download the file pleaseeeeeeeee?!! I didnt find it on Personal forum, plus there are hundreds of messages in there.

Driftwood posted an assortment of his .ini settings files here towards the bottom of the page. You need to be a member of personal-view and logged in to download the files - registration is free.

I'm thinking of hooking up a RC battery too cause being able to shoot for at least 7 hours is just the bees knees - will still weigh in the costs of the two solutions. But hearing that you can fry your GH2 if you hook it up wrong way around does scare me cause for me (with the exchange rate) $800 is a lot of money  But I was thinking of checking, double checking, and triple checking that I build a protection circuit into such a hack even before I hook up the RC battery via the DC-coupler - $90 for a Panasonic battery is quite steep really since everything including the camera is still made in China.

Everything you wanted to know about hooking up an RC battery....

Just used the battery posted in the video at the link on a shoot and got about 6 hours out of it. I've been using this battery for the past half year and it's still going strong.

Instructions are right here

MOST IMPORTART: Only upgrade using a FULLY charger battery and NEVER use a power supply. period!

Working on settings, driftwood has probably uploaded firmware over thousand times himself (if not more...lol)
I've done it a lot too, but not as much as drifwood has... ;)

BTW, it's easy to do.

The ini files, how do they work?! I got Ptool 3.62 + the base firmware, and the 44 mbps hack right now, I want the 176 mbps one, but I don't understand any of this, how this works, plus I asked the question on the thread I was given above (thanks for that) but Vitaly erased the messages, saying it would have consequences if we asked any questions, wtf?!

If you haven't done so yet, read this: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?212263-Ptool-for-beginners-Ptool-FAQ

This is helpful too: http://www.eoshd.com/content/3463/gh2-hack-footage-42mbit-avchd-108024p

The ini files are the patches to the base firmware settings. You could type in each numerical change to the settings yourself, or just use an ini file which does that for you - they show up as the alphabetical presets on the bottom of the ptool interface. Most likely any question you might have concerning the hack process has already been answered somewhere in this forum, use the advanced search and you'll find what you're looking for. Stick to this site for newbie questions - the discussion on personal-view tends to be on the advanced side and mostly centered around hack development.

Heh guys, what i see from the Driftwood's 176m setting look's great but should i use it a a professional shoot? I've been using Cb's 44/34 settings so far, and i like the results but the 176 footage looks much better.

If i do use 176, will it affect my workflow and how much card space does it use? I've got 2 x 32gig and 2x 16gigs Sandisk extreme's. Will that be enough for a 10 hour shoot?

Cheers

Manu, Vitaliy wrote that since you actually wrote that in an area dedicted for ONLY GH2 tester setting files.

Hey there,

are there any comparison videos out there to see the difference ?

Iam still a beginner started this year and not sure if this is worth more for advanced or professional videographer. Btw...I did read that it reduces sky 8-bit banding a bit, anyone did see better results with using grad filters aswell ?

Thx =)

My 8gig filled up very quick. Quicker then I could focus on my subject :) 1.41gig for about 2 minutes indoor shot. Yes, you're correct the 176 looks much better, especially motion. Look at the winding blowing the hair below.

What are the best settings that don't effect playback on the lcd/external monitor and don't have any issues with cards? I'm professional still photographer but I'm inching my way into video. I appreciate the highest quality video but right now I want the best combination of usability and image quality. I tried Sage's settings and while it looked good I had a hard time playing back on the lcd and with VLC on my computer. I tried the settings at http://www.eoshd.com/content/3463/gh2-hack-footage-42mbit-avchd-108024p and the first second appears corrupted but then it works fine. I'm using Sandisk 16gb Extreme Pro UHS-1 cards. The work you guys can do with the GH2 is inspiring.

Here is the best collection of settings. The “No adverse affects” settings are designed to give you the maximum image quality without sacrificing any of the factory reliability. Those settings will work with any memory card and the 1080p Low and both 720p settings will all span properly.

Try filming something with the 176 mb/sec settings and then try to film the exact same thing with the no adverse affects. See if you see any difference.

I found I still had a lot of banding, even with the Driftwood 176 in the above video. But I probably had the worst conditions with a flat fog in most shots + I was using a .9 ND filter so that may have also affected the banding. My advice, just don't even worry about the banding, it's there, but the overall quality on everything else is just amazing. If banding is your main concern, don't use this camera.
