Into 2013

I don't use an external recorder, I thought about it, but since I handhold using an EVF 80% of the time, I would be having to do without the on-screen info, which I need. If I had read reports that there was a startling improvemnet, I would reconsider, especially for 4.2.2... but as I said, I've been able to match my 10bit 4.2.2 HPX250 in most cases, and for me, that's good enough for now... There are things on the horizon I'm sure..

As to Panasonic's lack of apparent energy, remember that the AF100 beat the competition with an affordable larger sensor camera - look at early posts here, that was a big deal then. Maybe they should have waited and come in second with a better sensor, but I don't advise Peyton Manning how to play quarterback either. If the economic slump dissolves, I hope they get back into this game.. They are holding there own with broadcast cameras, and may not feel the need to go head to head with Sony until they have something way better to offer.. Might be wishful thinking, but to conitue the metaphor, everyone gave up on the 49ers too.

Panny can keep the body exactly the same, & still pull a quick $10k off me by simply increasing IS0, & DR, while banishing chroma clipping, & banding.

If Panasonic Broadcast doesn't have the will hopefully Consumer does.

I don't know why people lament the AF100 / large format tack that Panasonic has taken when there are many options
out there. If you want a larger format sensor with greater latitude, more resolution, you've got the BMD, the FS700
and the significant cuts in the price of a Scarlet this year.

Accept the AF100 (and AF100A) for what it is .. it's still a very good camera at an excellent price-point.

And the AF100 is wonderfully light for steadicams, long jibs, and for underwater stuff.

When it comes to your outlook for 2013, you control your destiny! Don't wait for Panny or anybody else.
Make the best decision you can for what your needs are and forge your path.

You can still use your AF100 for things that it's good at .. but .. I wouldn't have it as the only pony
in the stable at this point.

Was shooting yesterday at an event, and saw another crew there as well. We had the AF100 with just a DP6 attached. They had what looked like a 5d or 7d kitted out with a cage, rails, EVF, shoulder pad, extra battery, Atmos recorder, and possibly more. It was a huge beast. And I thought to myself - man I'm glad I can pretty much get all that in the simple form factor of the AF100. That said, I think in another year I need to move up to something better. Seeing RED announce a 20 stop sensor just blows my mind. That is the single biggest thing that I really want - more DR. The AF100 is starting to become quite pathetic in that area.

Keep in mind that at the time we're writing this, the AF100 delivers video that is superior to any user's Dragon Sensor Red, Sony F5, or Sony F55.

So hopefully not off-topic since the original post was about positives and negatives of the AF100 into 2013- but has anyone besides me noticed that the AF100 does motion better than most cameras in the price range (DSLRS, GH2,3, FS100,700, etc)? Subjective I know but really something I noticed immediately after using different cameras.

Its true - highlight handling and chroma could be a pain in some situations, but man do I miss my "ugly" AF100. The SLR 12mm and Nokton 25mm gave some really nice images on the AF100.

I know the value of the AF100 - specifically that I don't have to spend a lot to get great results. But there has to be a middle ground between the AF100 and RED that doesn't cost 15k no? But maybe I'm dreaming, at least for the next couple years.

The thing that frustrates me is that the AF100 was just such a good start, I want to see what was going to be the next step and as the pace of things has increased so much over the last few years, I really was hoping to see that next step by now. Be it a replacement to the AF100 or a step up in price or a completely different thing Its a bit disappointing that we haven't seen anything yet.

Exactly. The AF-100 is and should be the first camera in the MFT digital cinema line. Only time will tell if a higher end model will come anytime soon but I do want one.
