Interrotron University Video

I know most here probably want to see short films, music videos, etc - but figured I'd post this up for anyone that might be interested.

This is a piece I recently shot for the University of Texas school of Natural Sciences.
I'd been wanting to do an interrotron shoot for a long time, and finally got everything I needed for the setup.*

I shot the interviews (and some of the broll) - but didn't edit the piece.

*(thanks to our own Taylor Rudd who lent me his monitors when mine didn't show up in time)

Here are a couple of (not very good) pics to give you an idea of the prompter setup.

Good looking stuff Luis. I particularly enjoying seeing well done testimonial/promo videos... especially in the field of acacdemia... Not only do they pay my bills, but it certainly takes a creative and thought-out approach to make it visually interesting and worthwhile.

The clips from the people on camera seemed solid... were you impressed overall with the interrotron and how your interview subjects worked with it?

Thanks for the comments guys.

I was actually very surprised with how quickly people got comfortable with it. I expected them to be taken aback a bit when they walked in the room and saw the setup - but out of 9 interviewees only 1 person even made a comment about it. Everyone pretty much sat down and immediately felt comfortable with it. I suppose these days enough people are using Skype or videoconferencing of some kind that it feels natural enough.

As far as being impressed with the interrotron itself - personally I love the style and have been wanting to incorporate it into my work for a while.
It was only recently that I could justify buying the needed gear - and I'm happy I finally did. I have three shoots now lined up next week, two of which will use this same setup (and one which will use a prompter). So it's definitely been worthwhile.

what was your lighting and sound setup?

I'll see if I can't put together a diagram of some kind - but as far as lighting goes I had:

Rifa 55 using CFLs & eggcrate hanging off the ceiling just above camera pointing down at the subject about 45 degrees.
Rifa 88 using CFLs (with only two bulbs lit if I remember correctly) camera left side lighting the subject just a bit above the eye line.
Large Silver Reflector (which you can see in the pics) camera right - this acted both as a bounce for fill and as a barrier to keep the subject from seeing the interviewer on the other side.
VidLed just below camera to give a tiny bit of fill on the face (and a glint to the eye).
A small LED light set up behind (and above) the backdrop hitting the subject as a backlight (giving them that rim light on the shoulders).
Directly behind the subject there is a small 500 LED light with diffusion pointed back at the backdrop to get that vignette look on the black seamless.

As far as sound - I used an Oktava on a boompole mounted on a c-stand running into the Zoom.
I ran the audio out of the zoom (via a splitter) into the 60D (which I shot with).

Since you can't monitor audio on the 60D I always run it through the zoom so I can record a backup that I can monitor just in case something goes wrong.
