Internal ND filter throws off focus when set to infinity?

I noticed the other day that when zoomed in on an object about 3,000 feet away the image becomes blurry while using one or both of the internal ND filters, and I can't improve the focus (which is already set at infinity). If I remove the filters, the image becomes perfectly sharp.

This is either due to poor-quality filters, or a defect in my camera. However, before I ship it off to have it repaired, i'd like to know if anyone has experienced the same thing, or can replicate the experiment for me.

I've posted screen captures that I made with my XH-A1 to show what I'm talking about.

Looks like the depth of field is shallower for the shot with ND, (as expected). You should be able to sharpen at least part of the image by refocussing.

Can't refocus - I'm already at infinity., Besides, DoF is huge at that distance, so that can't be it.

Your setting is actually infinity minus, which is a bit after the infinity setting. If you adjust the focus ring you should be able to bring the image into focus.

Thanks Richard, I'll try again. But last time I couldn't refocus. Maybe there was dust in my eye.

Ha ha that happens to me too!

(But usually it is the focussing bar under the eyepiece that I nudge accidentally, and don't notice until I realise that nothing is sharp no matter how I turn the focus ring.)
