Internal mic (useful at all ?)

Hi, I am still in the planning stage for buying XH-A1 and my qeuestion to the ones who already have it is about the internal mic. Although I understand that buying a good external one is probably always a good idea but how bad (or good) is the internal one for outdoor filming ? Does anyone have a sample recorded with the internal mic?

Thanks in advance...

All internal mic are pretty much the same. It's an omni pattern that you'll never want to use for dialogs recording. If you have nothing else, it'll do the job but you're never going to get clear dialog that "pops" from the internal.

I might be able to toss you indoor noisy footage of interviews with the onboard. I loaned my camera to my brother and he used the internal microphone.

OK for ambient but it's really disappointingly poor, especially compared to the XL1 series on-board. You'd think Canon would carry on improving, not go backwards. It distorts any loud noise, for discos I have to use the mic attenuator.

rollinfive0w... yep. It's supposed to.

To at my 2 centavos to the original question, the on-board does work well for ambient nature sounds. The fact that it's stereo adds a spacial dimension to the audio track that's missing from a mono external. Aside from that, it has little value except as a place to hang the tally light.

Thanks to everybody. Adding the price of a decent external mic to the camera's price in my mind ...

What is it you want to record?
Mostly this would be some documentary during the eco trips. I don't expect a lot of dialogs or interviews. The central part would be the views. Although some good nature sounds would be a nice thing to have ...

Either way youre going to have to look at external. The rode ntg1 might fill your need.
