Interlacing problem I hope!

Hi guys,

As always I really appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Okay I have spent about 3 hours reading other threads about interlacing problems and I am still very confused but I am worried that my problem is an in camera one. I have been shooting a variety of stuff in 60i and 24p without any problems until last month.

I shot this

in 24p. I thought that the problem related to the whole 29fps and pull down thing which I still am not 100% sure I understand but then I shot something in 60i and had the exact same resulting footage.

Please someone tell me this is a fixable problem and has nothing to do with the camera.

As always I appreciate any insight and sincerely apologize if this has been covered before but I have been unable to find anything.

Cheers

That is not interlacing. That's damaged footage... possibly from dirty heads. How many hours on the camera, and how long has it been since you've cleaned it?

Before you use a cleaning cassette, because those are a little rough on the heads, you might try taking a new, blank tape, switching the camera to VTR mode, and insterting te tape and hitting PLAY. Let the tape play to the end, then stop it and eject and dispose of the tape.

Also, if you used Sony tapes for a long time and then switched to a different brand, or vice versa, you may have goop clogging your heads. This isn't likely to happen after one tape, but I have seen it happen after several tapes. In that case, it takes a professional head cleaning as a cleaning cassette will only make the problem worse.

As a side note, since you say you're still a bit confused on interlacing with 24p mode, read THIS. It explains very well why 24p mode has an interlaced frame every few frames.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Wow thank you so much. I am currently trying the blank tape idea.

I had been using some other brands and then switched to Sony.

Thanks again for your help you are a champion!

I agree totally with previous posters, after every 10-20 uses of tapes, clean with head-cleaner. This ensures no further problems- although not completely proven I also agree that switching between brands COULD be a bad idea, but like I said it's not proven.

Also I would service your camera every 2-3 years just to make sure everythings in top shape- you might notice this but there could be other underlying problems you cant see.
